CHAPTER I
Problem and Its Background

Before the invention of the light bulb, illuminating the world after the sun went down was a messy, arduous, hazardous task. It took a bunch of candles or torches to fully light up a good-sized room, and oil lamps, while fairly effective, tended to leave a residue of soot on anything in their general vicinity. Solar light bulb, an alternative sourced for daylight powered by sunlight. So that means a lot of savings from your electricity bill. A Solar Bottle Bulb is a big help especially for the poor people and those who wants to save money in electric bills. This bottle is embedded into the roofs of houses, with part of the bottle outside, and part of it inside. With the use of 100% renewable energy and accessible materials, this initiative enhances the quality of life and relieves the economic pressure suffered by the Filipinos, who on average earn Php 700 every month.

Electricity is one of the most important facilitating modern activities and country’s development. Through time, the importance of electricity to people’s life has only increased. On this ground, more efficient and reliable provision of electricity is desirable for the society. Many Filipinos were complaining about the high electric bills.

By promoting the solar light bulb in our society, it has a big contribution to lessen the electric bills. The procedure is simple and does not require a lot of training. When the sun hits the outside part of the bottle, a lot of light reaches the inside part of the bottle. The water inside the bottle makes the light omni-directional, like an electric light bulb.
This can be useful in isolated areas; in this problem we can see the effect of using the solar light bulb. This study will focus on the effect of the solar light bulb not only in the isolated area but also for those people who wants it too and how it can save the user’s electric bills.

However, the disadvantages of solar energy were neglected in the early phase of development. It isn’t always as reliable as other forms of power and tends to be expensive to install and maintain, because the devices rely on a steady supply of sunlight to generate power. The equipment is not that efficient, typically converting just 10% to 18% of the sun’s energy into electricity [3]. On top of the price of panels themselves, the cost of installing them varies greatly by location and climate. By most estimates, it takes at least six years for the initial costs to be repaid in saving from power generation under the best circumstances, and double that time under less ideal conditions [3]. Besides, the batteries and safety serve as potential problems. Since it is impossible to generate solar power 24 hours a day, batteries are needed for most systems to store excess power for use at night and rainy days. Unfortunately, these batteries can be expensive and have a shorter lifespan than solar…

Despite what any individual’s concerns are regarding energy, it has been generally accepted that the finite source generating the majority of our electricity is depleting at alarming rates. We need to find alternative sources for energy production. The most obvious and abundant source available is the sun. Advances in technology have enabled us to harvest the solar radiation which has been conducting the cycle of life for millions of years. There are two main categories when it comes to solar power, passive and active. The passive solar systems integrate the sun’s energy to heat living spaces and/or water in a building. These system are very simple consisting few moving parts, require negligible maintenance and no mechanical components (Passive Solar Design). Passive…

Solar energy is lauded as an inexhaustible fuel source that if free of pollution and has very few adverse effects on the earth. An example states that big windows placed on the sunny side of a building allow sunlight to heat absorbent materials on the fllor and walls. These surfaces then release the heat at night to keep the building warm. Similarly, absorbent plates on a roof can heat liquid in tubes that supply a house with hot water. (National Geographic) In my own life, I have experienced the amazing power of solar energy. As a small child growing up in Guyana, South America, I remember taking cold showers in the morning. By the afternoon time, the sun would heat up our plastic, Rubbermaid water tanks and I would experience for a short period, ‘hot water.’ Of course, this has improved over the years, and many households in my country choose to apply solar water heaters to their homes. This helps to save on electricity and other costs.…

Aside from political power, the Philippines should also be able to cater to its citizens and to protect them from attacks and ensure their security. From dreaded terrorists to individual crime rates, the military should also be capable of protecting citizens through advanced armory, tracking systems and efficient justice systems (Gray, 2011). Most of the problems in today’s military strategy are not the existence of the equipment but the capability to power them up and therefore reduce the costs for their creation (Gray, 2011). With the aid of solar power, the military can produce better equipment that can easily track down wanted individuals, or those that can place internal security systems to provide people with increased security both inside and outside their homes. With solar energy, the military can also be able to combat vicious terrorists such as ISIS or the Al-Qaeda and therefore restore political and social stability in the world.…

    Light Pollution

“Light Pollution” is a form of environmental pollution in which excessive artificial outdoor lightings affect the natural environment. Light pollution in Hong Kong is very serious. The main reason behind that are the artificial outdoor lightings. As there are many buildings scattered in Hong Kong, artificial lighting is omnipresent. The severe light pollution reduces the number of stars that are visible in the sky. The HKSAR Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, 20% of the total electrical consumption in Hong Kong was spent on lighting. Since electrical production is widely regarded as one of the major source of air pollutants, any misuse of electric lighting not serving its originally intended purposes means a huge waste of energy, and indirectly, generating air pollution. It is not uncommon to find poorly designed outdoor security light not using a lamp shade so that only a small fraction of light generated is directed to the ground, with a majority of light directed upwards towards the sky. Not only does this light provide no useful illumination, it also becomes a source of pollution to our night sky. IDA estimated that about US$2 billion, or equivalent to six million tons of coal, was spent in the US each year on wasteful lightings. Therefore light pollution not only means wasting energy and money, but also enhancing air pollution and global warming.…
