Intuition In To Kill A Mockingbird
Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” By this, he means: don't let the voices and beliefs of others overrule yours, but instead follow your own intuition. This is exactly what Atticus teaches his children in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. In the novel, Atticus shows his children that even though everyone may be against your belief or stand on something, continue to think for yourself even though others may disagree.
For example, when Scout and Atticus were talking about the summer ahead of them before the trial, Scout had said “Atticus, you must be wrong… most folks seem to think they’re right and you’re wrong”(pg. 120).

Authors often have a very good reason for choosing a particular personality for their story’s narrator. Scout was a vital character in the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Her impartial outlook on life and people was highly voluntary in order to produce the theme and message that Harper Lee was sending to her readers. Many of the events in the story would not have happened or would have occurred very differently if the novel was told through the eyes of an adult narrator. Even though Scout’s narration is often faulty or inaccurate, her innocence often allows readers to see the events and characters in the novel more clearly.…

In order to value a movie such as To Kill A Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee; one must recognize the significance of certain symbolic items that are placed in the movie, and how they turn this story into a work of art. The opening credits play an important role in the movie, and help to illustrate certain symbols within the novel. The various objects that are included in the title sequence are a drawing of a bird, a harmonica, a pocket watch, a pearl necklace, marbles, and a whistle. The title, To Kill A Mockingbird has little importance to the occurrence of events within the novel, but it does hold value in terms of symbolism. Two characters in the novel represent the mockingbird and each illustrates the idea of how innocence is destroyed by evil. The objects that take on symbolic value in To Kill A Mockingbird represent something much larger than their physical appearance. Although the title sequence holds great symbolic value, the central symbol is the harmless mockingbird. Both Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are innocent members of the community and invoke no harm on society, and they are destroyed by the illogical stereotypes within the town of Maycomb. However, the first occurrence of symbolism lies within the title sequence.…

One of the first optimistic points that can be found in this novel is found in Scout and Jem's father, Atticus Finch. There are many times throughout the novel in which Atticus represents the good in the American society at the time the book was published. Mr Finch was not a racist man. He held equal views of both races, which is why he had no problem with accepting the Tom Robinson case. The moral and ethical lessons taught to Scout and Jem by Atticus throughout the novel, were not meant to only assist in telling the story, but to help teach those reading the novel valuable lessons in life about equality and people's rights. One of the most important lessons taught by Atticus, was to "shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This is a valuable lesson for people of all ages to learn, and is conveyed in many contexts throughout the book. Harper Lee expressed optimism in this quote, as she believed that she could teach the people some good, and that they might learn from her novel. Through Atticus, Harper Lee showed the good in the world, and the good that the world could achieve.…

This advice can be taken literally, as in don’t kill a mockingbird or as in when we hurt things that do no harm to us, we are the ones who are doing a sin. An example of Atticus following his own belief is when Atticus stands up for Tom Robinson. Atticus believes that Tom Robinson is innocent in the case for raping Mayella Ewell and Atticus defends him. Atticus does this because he is a parent who knows that if he says things and he himself doesn’t follow it, then why should his children. Atticus treats his children like adults. The second hidden, but powerful, theme in To Kill a Mockingbird is facing reality. This was something most of the characters faced throughout the entire book. Characters, like Jem, faced this a lot especially towards the end of the book. “Mr. Jem, I ain’t never seen an any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man.”(Lee 279). This came from Reverend Sykes, an African American, talking to Jem about the jury which shocked Jem. Jem was a very smart young man and he was also very logical. It was obvious that the black man was innocent, and he was expecting to win the case but was shocked by the Reverend’s words. Jem started to face the reality of the racist Maycomb town for the first time. He started to see what he was growing up in.…
