Communication is needed in a job all the time, so effective communication is essential, to support an individual, families and work colleagues. Having effective communication in the workplace is essential as it ensures information is clear, mistakes aren’t made and the correct care is given. It is also essential based on an individuals requirements, such as a hearing impaired individual would require specific ways to communicate, such as picture books.

Its important to observe an individuals reaction when communicating with them to ensure that they have understood what you have said to them, to ensure that they understand what is going to happen, to see if they are bored or interested in what you are talking to them about, and to look at their facial expressions and body language as it could tell you more than words if they find it difficult to communicate.

There may be times when communicating with an individual becomes difficult. To seek advice about communication, I would approach the senior in charge, unit manager or home manager. I would seek this advice when communication with an individual becomes difficult, such as another language being spoken, the current communication methods are no longer effective, when I am not sure how to deal with a situation or when an individual has a special communication need.
