Finally in Chapter 8, the reader is given insight into the types of letters Krakauer received, after having previously written an article about McCandless, with most of the incoming mail giving harsh criticism on the young traveler's story for being mentally ill, and unprepared. Yet McCandless isn’t the only one to go off on to a far fetched adventure out into the Alaskan wilderness, as one school teacher put it, with Krakauer offering three other examples of others with stories like McCandless. These other stories of Rosellini, Waterman, and McCunn, also prove Christopher McCandless’s uniqueness despite there being similarities between him and of the many others who shared the same philosophy as McCandless. Different in a sense that McCandless,…

Written during the 19th century, while the movement of transcendentalism was developed and active, Thoreau considered himself a transcendentalist, influencing him to write this literary piece, and his thoughts and perspective of life within it. Targeting an attentive, intellectual, and mature audience, he describes his attitude toward life through composition of rhetorical methods, such as alliteration and metaphors.…

Who was McCandless exactly? It’s as if he was a person who shared and helped but then backed away when things got too evolving from him. Chris believed throughout his travels that the only thing a person needs to be happy was themselves and nothing more. He reassures this in a letter he writes to Ron Franz stating his point is, “that you do…

I agreed with Roman and Andrew’s views more than Krakauers. McCandless didn’t plan enough and he also assumed surviving would be easy. First he had to hitchhike to reach his destination, he spent days trying to get a ride. He should have been more prepared, and given thought into potential problems before he started…

It is said that Chris McCandless was a bright and ignorant person according to Cellarmans argument and maybe others point of views. In my perspective I agree but disagree as well although I agree with the argument that was said by Callarmans. As I state a quote that was said by Shaun Callarman “ had no business going into Alaska with his Romantic silliness”. As it says “Romantic silliness” he was meaning that he wanted to die in a poetic but as well as a beautiful surrounding of love and happiness. He traveled to find himself into the wilderness to figure out who he is.…

After reading the previous chapters, the readers have already made their own judgement on Chris, which are probably mostly negative. And so to address this issue, Krakauer initiates chapter 8 by introducing negative comments and mails not only about Chris but also to him, the author. These will serve as an argument that the author will later attempt to disprove indirectly while at the same time, still informing the readers about what makes Chris special and unique.…

Chris McCandless was a young man who lived a strange, adventurous life. I disagree with Krakauer, McCandless seems to be a crazy person. Chris’s craziness is clearly shown throughout the book. He managed to survive one-hundred and thirteen days in the wild, but in the end he did die.…

McCandless, an intelligent child to say the least, was frustrated with orders by anyone. He wanted to do things his way or no way and he does this throughout his life. Whether it was getting an F in physics because he refused to write lab reports a certain way (an F was something that was never on McCandless report card) or not listening to advice from his parents to the extreme of leaving society to go into the wilderness, McCandless definitely was not a follower. His parents were told by one of his teachers at an early age that Chris "marched to the beat of his own drummer". Chris never lost his ability to do things the way he wanted and when he wanted to do them. After receiving his diploma from Emory in 1990 he set off on a two-year escapade that would eventually end his life but in my opinion, if Chris could start over he would probably not do things much differently. I think he would still donate his $25,000 to an organization, leave his car in the woods, burn the remainder of his money, and hitch-hiked across the United States. The only thing he might do differently is…

The McCandless family suffered from many problems; such as the father’s infidelity and abusive nature. An author Chris admired, Leo Tolstoy, once wrote, “I wanted movement and not a calm course of existence. I wanted excitement and danger… I felt in myself a superabundance of energy which found no outlet in our quiet life” (Krakauer 15). McCandless had highlighted this passage in a book that was found with his remains. Tolstoy speaks of his need for a life different from…

He had very strong beliefs along with the determination to let nothing stop him in his path. Chris set out to live in the Alaskan wilderness for a couple of weeks and it proved to be more than he could handle. His resources became scarce and he feared for his own life. He ended up leaving an S.O.S note on the door of the bus he was living in and it read “Injured, near death, and too weak to hike out of here, I am all alone, this is no joke (Krakauer 12).” His journey to Alaska proved to be fatal and a vast amount of theories began to spread across the media about how Chris died. Everyone has built an opinion about Chris McCandless, some say he’s crazy and ignorant and others say he’s bright and heroic. Shaun Callarman, a native Alaskan, didn’t admire him at all for his courage or his noble ideas. He felt that Chris McCandless was “Bright and ignorant at the same time,” and that “He had no common sense and no business going to Alaska with his romantic silliness.” I disagree with Shaun’s opinion to a certain extent because I feel that Chris was both foolish and noble when he began his journey to Alaska. Chris sought out to find himself and he let nothing stand in his path, but he wasn’t fully prepared for the…

McCandless early year of his life was abusive and unsettling because his father abused him in many ways that only siblings and he can explain. His father also had another family and impacted McCandless. McCandless could express it. Growing up, his family wanted the best for him. His parents believed that they could buy his respect. McCandless thought other. Overall, Chris McCandless’s childhood wasn’t the best. His journey was the highlight of his life until it came to the end. He was poisoned and suffered for many days with an illness of starvation and was barely able to stand up. During his last days, Chris McCandless writes, “‘I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!’” (Krakauer 199). Chris McCandless finally opened eyes to see what he had in front of him because he realized that his family did care for him and that the people he met along the way gave him happiness, but was too much of a fool to realize. Another most obvious reason for Chris McCandless being a fool for him leaving his life. He left his family, money and career behind to go chase his goal to Alaska. It was awfully nice of him to donate his money to charity, but he lost everything he…

I believe that Chris McCandless is brave and courageous. He chose to take a risk and said “I don’t want to live this boring life. I agree that Chris McCandless was ignorant and bright at the same time but he liked to do what he did. He didn’t really have common sense but he was brave. Chris McCandless came from a rich family and graduated from Emory University he was a top athlete and a top student in the University. Whenever he graduated from college, Instead of embarking on a prestigious career or work he chose to give his savings to charity. i think if he would of kept studying he would of had a good life and lived longer than he expected to. Like they would say he was ignorant and that he didn’t really have common sense. He also had a degree and he came from a wealthy family I don't know why he would just throw that away like that. I agree with them because instead of studying and becoming something in life he donated his money and left on a journey.…

Who was Chris McCandless? Some say that he is a legend and others say that he was nothing more than a boy who threw away his future. Is the only one to blame for his own death? McCandless was the type of kid who always questioned things; he desired to know more but refused to work for the answers. In elementary school, McCandless was placed in accelerated classes but because he was so stubborn he refused to listen to the teachers and do the extra work. All in hopes that he would convince his teachers he was not smart and he would be taken out of the accelerated classes. McCandless rarely planned or prepared for the future, causing him to be unprepared for his journey into the Alaskan wilderness. He traveled into the wilderness because he wanted to discover what was missing from his normal life. Through his journey he realized that true happiness is when you share experiences with others. Unfortunately he discovered this too late into his journey and when he tried to return back to civilization his route was flooded. He soon ran out of food which inevitably leads to his death.…
