Chris McCandless, a Sophisticated Young Man.
Even though Chris wanted to get absolute freedom, his journey turned out to be a just selfish one, not even getting totally separated from the civilization or society.
It is possible that he went out on a journey to get everlasting freedom from strict rules and formats. Even if Chris was an intellectual student, getting all As, well enough to go to Harvard law school, one time, he got F on a Physics. The reason was that Chris did not follow the format that the teacher told to students, regardless of the answers. His father agrees with the teacher, which shows his father, as well as the teacher, was a very strict person, especially on rules. As he realized that his father had another wife, and thought of his father as a immoral man, this young man who was full of energy may wanted to get out the society and get free. As he got out of the society, he earns money by himself and travels by himself. The one contradiction that I found was that he needed the money. Nowadays, money is necessary for trade, economy; it became the basic part of our lives. In this sense, money can represent the civilized world, which Chris was not able to get rid of. If he did not need the money, there is no reason for him to work in a Macdonald or under Westerberg. Chris even mentions in one of his letters that he realized the money was necessary part of his journey, which seems contradictory for pure freedom.
Another contradiction could be found with his life in Alaska. The reason why he went there was because he was motivated by his books. One of them is “Call of the Wild”, by Jack London. The story of this book is about a dog from California, going back to Alaska undergoing lots of sufferings. It seems that the dog got absolute freedom, but the author himself never went to Alaska, not even into the wilds. Chris also thought that Alaska was a pure nature. He thought that this purity and isolation would enable him to find out who he truly

“Alex is a nut” “he forsaken a loving family, abandoned his car, watch, and burned the last of his money.” These quotes are people’s opinion on Chris. But like most opinions some view it the other way. Chris is a man that shows great dedication and commitment to accomplish what he did. He was not crazy for doing something he was passionate for. Of coarse anyone isolated for that period of time can get a little crazy but he knew the…

The first thing about Chris is that he was very bright. Even people noticed how smart he was, like when Franz said, “ He seemed very intelligent.” This shows that Ron sees how smart Chris is. It also explains to us that Chris knows what he is doing and that he wants to do it. Another thing about Chris is that he made food decisions. For instance, he learned off of the people who he met like when he learned how to smoke meat. This shows that he is preparing for his adventure in Alaska. Therefore demonstrating how he made good decisions. Another good decision that he made was buying the plant book. This shows that he isn’t crazy because he is preparing for his time in Alaska. Clearly Chris was a smart man who made some good choices on his journey.…

He wanted to be like other noble authors like Tolstoy , Jack London, etc. To live up to their expectations. Such as leaving everything behind. He donated all his money to a charity. Then McCandless died being brave and different than other for believing what he thinks is right. McCandless could have lived on and tell his story if he survived none of his favorite authors died doing what McCandless did. Since Chris died attempting to do that he failed others see it as he died doing what he thought was right. He burned his money he had left in pocket why not give it to someone like how he donated the money or was it a fast way to get rid of a plethora of money. In my opinion McCandless is a narcissistic bastard not telling his loved ones that he will be off alone in Alaska.…

Chris was willing to abandon his loving family and not say a word to them just so he could go live by himself in nature. His actions were inconsiderate. It demonstrates how crazy Chris was since he was willing to do this, and pretty much get himself killed. He, at the time before his adventure, had a great life that most people would have loved to have. Chris was a strange, crazy young…

Although some may believe that Chris McCandless went into the wild because of inspiration, I think that his primary reason was due to his family issues and emotional damage. I feel as if he was trying to run away and leave his past life. I can agree with others beliefs that he was inspired because he did read many things and was very influenced by some writings. However, the apparent problems he had with his family caused this issue because he showed many times before that he didn’t like his home life. Others even saw that he was unhappy with his parents and he wanted to leave and live what he thought to be a more peaceful life. Not only was just his parents divorce talks, his arguments with his father, and his distance he felt from his mom and dad a huge problem for him, he also was emotionally damaged by other…

Chris wanted to be free from the world he lived in, in which he thought was a very materialistic world. “My life isn't complete once i haven't been around the world yet”(Chris McCandless). Living how you want to live it doesn’t make you selfish. People are always talking about living your dreams, but when Chris attempts his they criticise him for everything he did. This is evidenced by some of his own final words; ‘HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED.’ Chris was about to die, but he had finally realized a peaceful point of moderation and homeostasis between both opposite forces in the whirlpool of his mind. He was ready to become the man he was supposed to be, and who knows what kind of man he could have been? Would he have gone to Harvard Law like his mother Billie had hoped, and saved the poor as an influential lawyer? Would he have written his own account of his…

His admires are inaccurate when stating that he was a selfless person while it’s clearly seen that he was a very selfish individual. As well as an open-minded person when Krakauer gave straight examples of situations, where he would smoothly overlook some facts about people he cared about. Furthermore we can all agree that he was an ill-prepared individual, who made stupid choices like going into the wild without appropriate gear. I believe that it’s really hard to understand Chris’s personality and choices he made over these two years. But if his admirers tried to read chapters 10 to 13 with different eyes, they would be able to catch few gaps in his line of thought while he grew. Even though he had many faults we can all agree, critics and admirers, that he was a very honest person and truthful to his beliefs and standards. We might have learned a lot from Chris’s adventures and point of views about reality. It’s really sad realizing that a young soul like his didn’t have time to share his experiences and thoughts with the world before it was too…

At his Emory University graduation, Christopher seemed happy but implied to his parents that he will be traveling for the summer. As stated from Into the Wild, “McCandless went into the wilderness not primarily to ponder nature or the world at large but, rather, to explore the inner country of his own soul.”(Krakauer 183) Christopher needed to find himself after being lied to his whole upbringing. Traveling was his escape from the corrupt humanity that he felt surrounded him.…

Have you ever seen a hero who has run from a place where he has encountered problems? The answer is no because a hero is a person who is ready to face any difficulties in order to solve them. However, Christopher abandoned the place where he had problems, so his deeds such as leaving his family, money, and friends pointed out that he was a fool. Young children should be ready to sacrifice their lives in order to protect and develop their countries because if they don’t do it, who will? Nevertheless, Chris deserted his society instead of serving and protecting it. Once, he said, “How important it is in not life necessarily to be strong but feel strong.” His decision was the opposite of his quote because if he was strong or felt strong, he should have faced his problems in the society instead of his foolish decision, which was quitting the society. In addition, he also gave a bad message to all teenagers. His actions showed that leaving the society is a way to solve problems though it is the…
