Interview With A Teacher
The person of choice, for my conducted interview, was Kristen Hicks, of Cumberland Road Elementary. Currently, Mrs. Hicks holds the occupation of a library and media specialist. However, prior to receiving these positions, Mrs. Hicks engaged predominantly in teaching kindergarten through fourth grade. Overall, Mrs. Hicks has been a part of the Hamilton Southeastern School District, for the last fifteen consecutive years. The majority of this duration, has partaken at Cumberland Road Elementary. For Mrs. Hicks, the deciding factor, for choosing the teaching profession, comprises solely on the passion to work with children. Whether in the field of teaching, or a different career path, Mrs. Hicks reveals the ultimate goal, was to seek a profession, which included children. When asked about the essential teaching qualifications, Mrs. Hicks recognizes the love of children, and a passion for learning, as the two main requirements. Mrs. Hicks extended this point, concluding a teacher needs to have an interest in assisting the child, through all aspects of their life. This motivation comes from myself, after attaining academic honors at a college level, despite suffering detrimental brain damage. Hence, the other reason for me entering the field of education. My goal is to continue my own self-improvement as a educator, until I am proficiently able to transfer this ability of self-growth and motivation, along to my students.     Washingtn Univeristy psychologist, Richard DeCharms, held a yearlong study on sixth grade students that were recieving a new type of teaching method that was taught to their teachers. Teachers were instructed to “de-emphasize grades and time limit--lowering the pressure on kids—and distributed workbooks and other materials that prompted learning for its own sake”. In the same district other sixth grade students were taught with the usual methods.     I did an interview with a second grade teacher this week and decisions that she had to make. When I was asking her some of the question it was hard for her to answer because she thought she didn’t have any decisions she had to make. It was like it was so easy for her to do everything. So one of the questions I had to ask what are some examples of typical, quick decisions she had to make on a daily basis. She had a confused face and she had to think hard and she told me extra time on skills and the students behavior if they got into trouble they had to go to the office. The second one I asked her was what were five most difficult school-related decisions that she had to make this week and what made them difficult.
