Outline
Habitat in intertidal rocky

shores
Intertidal distribution pattern Species list
Adaptation of organisms

1. Habitat in intertidal rocky shores

The intertidal zone: the region between the high

tide mark and the low tide mark
Tides are periodic rises and falls of large bodies of water caused by the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon
The tide comes in and out almost twice in 24 hours, leaving the higher reaches of the shore exposed for much longer than the lower areas.

Low tide on the rocky shores

High tide on the rocky shore 1. Habitat in intertidal rocky shores

An extreme habitat

+ Movement of the tides
→ change oxygenation, desiccation and temperature
→ food and nutrients arrive, wastes are washed away
+ Physical action of waves
- Create shear forces on the rocks and could potentially dislodge organisms.

1. Habitat in intertidal rocky shores
+ Exposure to air
- Is stressful to marine organisms
+ Temperature fluctuation
-May change 300C within an hour
- More intense radiation
+ Change in Salinity and level of oxygen + Species relationship
They compete for space and food

2. Intertidal distribution pattern
Different organisms able to withstand different degrees of

stress are found other areas
Upper limit: depends on physical environment.
Lower limits: are affected by interactions between organisms The greater the shore’s slope and the lesser the variation in the surface form of the rock
→ more delineation
Locations within rocky shore sites support greater numbers of one species than others

Vertical distribution Rock pool

3. Species List
Organisms must be able to tolerate the physical

stresses unique to this environment

Animal
Phylum

Example

Mollusca

Periwinkle, mussel, smooth limpet, Striped limpet,
Scaly limpet, Ribbed top shell, Chiton, Dog

The Rocky Shore is an ecosystem of great magnitude although it is filled with a number of smaller ecosystems with in that rocky shore. These smaller ecosystems are the tide and rock pools with in the rocky shore and are home to a large variety of different organisms. All these organisms are not there aimlessly, each and every organism affect one another wether it be plankton, seas squirts, red waratahs, wobbegong sharks, blue octopus etc. Even filtering creatures and plankton are a major part of the ecosystem and the food chain at the rocky shore. This is because if any creature gets abolished no matter what it may be then this creature’s predator’s food becomes scarce and this will result in this particular organism getting wiped out and so on and so forth. With in a food chain almost everything has a predator, unless this…

The Salton Sea began its way to life in 1904, when California decided that they needed a way to tap into the Colorado River to irrigate their crops. They decided that they would need to create two intake gorges without the use of floodgates. In came the California Development company and dredged the two gorges; but not long after, the intakes became clogged with silt deposits from the Colorado River and water stopped, creating the need for another intake gorge. But only a year later, in 1905, a miscalculation led to saline water flooding into the gorges, called the Salton Sinks, creating the present day Salton Sea. Currently the source of water for the Salton Sea comes from four different locations: The New River…
