Interracial Bias
Individuals associated with Dartmouth College and Princeton University created a study that deals with ironic effects of racial bias during interracial interaction. The study began off of the basis that individuals that have high levels of racial bias tend to regulate them selves when around others of another race. They often do this to make sure that their racial bias does not show. Individuals with low level of racial bias tended not to regulate themselves as much because they were more comfortable in their situation. Interestingly, researchers believed that individuals with high levels of racial bias were favored more by the opposite race. In order to confirm these hypotheses researchers created a study. In the study that researchers created they had interracial pairs (black/white) and intraracial pairs (white/white). Interracial and intraracial pairs were all same-sex. After the individuals became paired they were each individually taken to a room, given instructions and were prepared to take a test. All the topics were the same pertaining to race relations. After the interaction with each other, each participant was asked to fill out a survey about their interaction. To finish the study, the participants completed a task that was not related to the study, paid, and then released. The IAT test that this study used, wanted participants to categorize Black and White names and pleasing and unpleasing words as quickly as possible. Through the trials of this service, the levels of racial bias were formed. Participants were also asked questions about whether the new the participants they were interacting with, as well as, their favorability towards them.     I think that the results of my IAT were accurate. One of the surveys I took was a question asking me “How much do you like Asians, Blacks, Hispanics and Whites?” The survey is supposed to assess conscious beliefs and attitudes. We as humans possess different thoughts and feeling that we do not consciously realize or recognize. This survey had me sort through faces and words by using the I and E keys. The survey measures how fast and accurate you can categorize the words and pictures. The results of my IAT showed that I was very accurate and positive with the groups in this order: Whites, Asians, blacks, and Hispanics. I can agree with this result because it makes sense; that I recognized my ethnicity before other ethnicities. I think you should take the test a few times before getting a valid answer, there were a few times where I pressed the wrong key because I was trying to go through the pictures and words fast like it says. I think that prejudice can be difficult to measure accurately because people can hide their feelings, emotions and opinions easily. They could be prejudice but not show it when taking surveys and tests but when walking down the street a person could be prejudice.     The Race IAT required me to associate bad words with Black people, good words with White people, and the other way around. My results unfolded as “Your data suggest no automatic preference between Black people and White people” (Project Implicit, 2011). Moreover, for the Weapons IAT, I had to associate White Americans with harmless objects, Black Americans with weapons, and vice versa. With this test, the feedback I received was “Your data suggest a moderate automatic association for Harmless Objects with Black Americans and Weapons with White Americans” (Project Implicit, 2011).
