1.Introduction
International students make a significant contribution to Australia economy, the Education sector is the third export sector behind coal and iron. Over 120,000 Chinese students study in Australian schools and universities. China is the largest purchaser of Australian debt. Actually, Australian education exports down 20% (twenty per cent) this year showing a worrying scenario at Australian economy. This report focuses on main Australia’s competitors, the main causes and consequences of the decrease particularly in reference to students and also analyze data to identify future international education market trends.

2.Overview

International education contributed $ 12.5 billion in export income to the Australian economy in 2007, up 17% since 2006. The largest source countries for international students in Australia are China (22%) and India (14%). Otherwise, new figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that falling overseas student numbers have removed more than AU$ 3 billion from Australian education exports in 2012. The country biggest service export sector fell to AU$ 13.9 billion in 2011 - a decline of nearly 20% from 2010 exports. This sharp decline has been attributed to a strengthening Aussie dollar, more stringent visa requirements and highly publicised stories of violence against foreign students in Australia.

Education is the third largest export sector behind coal and iron ore. Universities rely on international student fees for about 15% of their funding. Around 18% of Australia’s tertiary enrolments are by international students. According Australian Monthly Summary of International student environment as at year-to-date(YTD) July 2012, there were 447,487 enrolments by full-fee international students in Australia on a student visa. This represents a 6.9 decline on the same period in 2011.

3.Competitor analysis
The US, UK, Australia, and Canada are currently the most popular destinations for international students. The US is the undisputed leader with approximately 723,277 foreign enrollments in 2010-11, Traditionally the U.S and U.K have been the most prestigious choices, due to dominating university top 10 rankings with the likes of Harvard, Oxford, MIT and Cambridge. More recently however they have had to compete with the rapidly growing Asian higher education market.
