PROJECT BACKGROUND
Graz University of Technology is a public engineering school, also known as the Erzherzog Johann University. It pursues top teaching and research in the fields of the engineering sciences and the technical-natural sciences. An integral part of putting together excellent education and training programs knows about the needs of society and the economy. Ultimately, the quality of the training at Graz University of Technology is carried by the strength of its knowledge-oriented and applied research including the study of hydraulic structures and their optimization in design, fluid mechanics, construction and economy, in conjunction with relevant specialist areas(especially geotechnical), as well as the quantitative water management principles taking into account the ecological requirements of this with an international focus with a regional focus (mainly hydropower and flood control). For my internship, I am analysing the behaviour of water using the physical and numerical model. The term ‘water’ in this project refers to the flowing water such as at the river, dam, reservoir and others. The behaviour of water is differs depending mainly on the structure of the channel in the nature itself. The discharge and velocity are also change especially due to raining seasons and also sediment transportation. Most of the time, the flow of the water is in unsteady form. In this project, the water can be analysed numerically and by physical model. By means of physical model, there will be model test such as Model Test Hydro Power Plant (HPP) Stegenwald which is conducted at the laboratory to gain data. All the measurement such as water level of the model will be taken and boundary condition will be set up. Then by means of numerical model, the software HEC RAS can interpret the data gain from the model test conducted through some sketches and graph produced. The reason behind the idea is to identify the possibility of flooding happening and hence, the prevention by modification can be done. Flooding happens when the water flowing beyond the capacity that can be withstood by the channel. The physical model gives us the brief description about the result of certain discharge to the channel and the result shown by HEC RAS should tally with the result gain from physical model. The use of the laser scan gives better view on the plan constructed and the impact of discharge in water. The comparison and analysis of behaviour of water from the scan done also can be done. 2

The objective of using the software HEC RAS mainly is to improve the manual system used by physical model (by trial and error and repetition) before modification being done. This software helps to save time to test the structure which concern about the optimum sediment transportation and the optimum discharge allowed. The modification of the structure such as the ramp design that influence the flow of water and sediment also can easily illustrated using the HEC RAS; thus the cost of construction of structure for modification also can be reduced. As a starter, it is good to understand the fundamental of hydraulic and the software HEC RAS for the earlier period of internship. This process will take around 2 months for completing it. After mastering this software, I will use it to interpret the data of a reservoir to form an on-going project. The result gained then can be compared with result gained by using the software TELEMAC (A 2D water profile). This TELEMAC interpretation is...
