Internist Personal Statement

As I raise my head from the Spanish picture book, I see a room full of sparkling eyes filled with joy and sheer enthusiasm. I smile back with a warm blush, as I hear the kids' innocent laughter. It strikes me with amazement how these kids are so open to learning from me - a stranger in their land who can barely speak their language. That moment, witnessing the happiness on their faces while receiving our donated books and clothes changed the meaning of happiness in my life. It didn't just change my outlook on life; it had changed me. My volunteer trip to Mexico was a trip to cherish for a lifetime. It rewarded me with one of the greatest lessons I will possibly ever learn. Happiness doesn’t come from the latest gadgets or the best clothes;
Such altruistic life experiences can become addicting, and I had realized that I wanted to spend the rest of my life continuing this virtuous cycle. My interest in Internal Medicine quickly became evident when I found a common ground between my passion in community service and a rewarding career in medicine. Ever since I learnt about Doctors Without Borders, I knew that alleviating someone's pain and saving human lives was the best way I could make a difference in society. My role as an Internist would not only be stimulating but will also prove to be valuable in the community, as it would allow me to build long-term relationships and provide a continuity in the health-care of my patients; a privilege I strive for. Similar to the smiles of kids in Mexico I helped create, I saw my patients' smiles every time I greeted them and spent that two extra minutes educating them about their condition. It almost feels like a chapter of Sherlock Holmes, where I can not only solve diagnostic mysteries but can also master the art of attention to detail and enlighten my patients with valuable knowledge. It amazes me how learning opportunities in Internal Medicine are endless, and with each rising day I might witness a new diagnostic challenge. My curiosity and characteristic vigilance have landed me with opportunities such as Vice-President of Global Affairs in Interact Club, Student Director of residence activities at my college, and researching and presenting various topics throughout my medical school career. These experiences allowed me to hone my leadership skills, ability to perform meticulous research, and planning while being keenly observant. I believe that Internal Medicine offers an intellectual platform where I can further master these traits and see a diverse range of patients, encompassing all the organ systems.
