The Negative Effect of the Internet on Businesses
Abstract
The internet has made the lives of society in general, easier. The only question is, what are we giving up and sacrificing in order to have this luxury? It is undeniable that there are many negative aspects of the internet, and that they affect our lives daily. However, what people tend to overlook is the effect it is having on our businesses. By cutting out many social activities and introducing unethical principals into people's lives, it is in turn, hurting businesses. It has encompassed smart individuals to the point of addiction, that they now neglect their responsibilities. This is all besides the fact that companies rely on it to run their operations far more than they should and that it has cost many people their jobs, for their profession is now obsolete or because the competition was too great. Therefore, I believe it is up to society as a whole to do something about these problems and come up with a solution.

Most of the sources used when researching this paper were articles from the news that illustrated what the author was trying to prove at that point in the paper. For instance, when the paper discusses the security issue, the author brought down an article about how even Microsoft got hacked. The same applies to the article about the guy who dropped dead after playing 50 hours of online gaming and the article where Jon Sondergaard talks about how his business is run through the internet. The author also found online some articles that talked about the negative effect the internet was having on businesses and brought them down also. In addition, while doing the research to write this paper, the author came across a few famous quotes that applied to what he was trying to prove, so he brought them down to help illustrate his point. Finally, one of the sources in the article was Alan Carr, he is considered an expert on addiction by many, especially in the case of smokers,

There are more cons than pros for the Internet. Nicholas Carr has many great pieces of evidence to support his thesis. I agree because the Internet can take you down many wrong paths but at the same time technology is our future. Today people are not focusing on trying to improve our future, they are worried about today’s fashion or video games or celebrities. One of the studies Carr looked at was by Cornell which figured out that web surfing does distract students. This is good information for schools on how to help their students learn in the best way, and stay on track. The neuroscientist named Michael Merzenich made a very dramatic reason what the long-term effects of the Internet. Merzenich said the Internet could lead to death, which could be right but we don’t have any proof at the moment. At the same time, I think the Internet is a great source for information. I wish Carr talked a little about how the Internet also has important information…

The Internet has made traditional businesses more efficient and has created new businesses that did not exist before the Internet. For example, before the Internet, the only way to buy a car was to physically visit the dealership. Now, the Internet allows consumers to research options about different cars, and the condition that they are in. This process has made the business more efficient for buyers and sellers. Not only has the Internet enhanced traditional businesses but it has created new businesses as well. Businesses like Amazon.com which is a virtual department store, have come into existence purely because of the Internet and now large, profitable retail company. The Internet has created many business opportunities; therefore, the Internet has made business transactions more efficient.…

The Internet and other forms of technology have been involved in the reformation of our lives. The article, "Is Google Making Us Stupid," by Nicholas Carr primarily focuses on the influence of the internet on our thinking behaviors, while in the article "Another Look Back, and a Look Ahead," by Edward Tenner mainly focuses on advances and setbacks of that go hand in hand with technology. In the modern world, technology has been an extremely vital well of knowledge that contributes to our lives. The internet includes all sorts of information on all topics one can think of. It allows for us to answer all of our questions with a very simple steps. Even though the internet and technology are undeniably important assets of the modern world, people should rely more on their skills rather than relying on technology for all their necessities. The ability to socialize with others is more important than the internet. It is the basis of our lives and the only method of communication between human beings. There have been more cases of social awkwardness than ever before, and it is believed to be connected with the internet. Simply sitting down in front of a monitor and searching for all that we need isolates us from those around us and takes away some of our social abilities, thus making it harder and more awkward to get back into society.…

    2. Some organizations that have been negatively affected by the internet include: small businesses, Newspapers, Music, and travel agencies. Small business cannot compete with other business who can afford to have a website to advertise because there is little room in a budget for a website for a small business. Newspapers are more expensive to make than online news and online news is free for the consumer and much easier to access. Most people are able to buy music online for free so the sale of CD’s has plummeted since the internet has emerged. Travel agencies also lose revenue because if the internet, it is very easy for travelers to book hotels and plane tickets online. It is almost impossible for these organizations to compete with the internet expect solely by the fact that some people would rather pay extra to read a newspaper or go to a local business. In some aspects I think it is possible for computers to replace the work force but not in others. I don’t think computers will ever be able to fight fires, arrest criminals, or teach students like humans can.…

When researchers presented evidence to people that the internet causes addiction, depression, and psychological discombobulation, they resounded,“‘What’s next? Microwave abuse and Chapstick addiction’” (Dokoupil). Truthfully, people find the evidence impossible to fathom. The Internet allows us to instantly access the business world, keep in touch with our friends, and make our work easier. It would seem that the benefits would far outweigh any problems. Serious problems, however, can occur to Internet users when they use the Internet far too much. Evidence shows that excessive Internet use can damage people's intelligence, hinder relations and cause depression, and can impose on people a virtual world or an altered sense of reality.…

The internet has been so embedded into modern day society that there is no turning back. We can never go back to the time when Facebook and Snapchat didn’t exist. According to Dewey, only 20% of the adults in the U.S. do not have access to the internet, mostly because they can’t afford it or are against/uninterested in it (1). That 20% have managed to live without the internet, but most people are so reliant on it they can’t even imagine living without it. Also, in some ways, the internet has increased productivity in work. In which, it has made working easier with its easy access to limitless information and quick connections.…

This makes life easy for the individual as he or she does not have to leave and can pretty much purchase what ever they want right from their own home. Online shopping has also brought many companies a lot of money as millions of dollars are spent every year by consumers who are shopping online. For financial institutions it has made the transfer of money easier, convenient, faster and safer. The negative effect of online transactions and business activities is that…
