International Sports Law
Deadline: the assignment is due by 6pm on Friday 13th April 2012 Important note: It is essential that the assignment conveys your views and your critical analysis. The aim of the assignment is to allow you to demonstrate your understanding of the topic and elaborate your response. You will need to support your statements with reference to appropriate research literature, but mere repetition of what other authors say is clearly not sufficient to pass the assignment. Pick an assignment topic from one of the following:
1. Critically analyse, from a legal point of view, whether the commercialisation of sport has left sport in need of more or less intervention from the government (understanding government to be not restricted to the UK Government, but to any kind of Public authority – e.g. the European Union (EU), the Council of Europe, United Nations etc.).
2. Critically analyse whether International Sports Governing Bodies should allow their members to bring their disputes to the national courts or would it be more effective to maintain the referral to arbitration. Support your answer with examples and explain the virtues and pitfalls of both options before concluding with your opinion.
You need to submit one electronic copy of your assignment. Please make sure that your full name and the title of this course appear on the first page of the assignment. Please also make sure you number all the pages and include a bibliography that complies with University of London conventions. You may include appendices and these will not count toward your word total. Please proof-read your assignment for typographical and grammatical errors before you submit it.
The preferred method of referencing is the Harvard system – for full details see: Harvard Business School. Citation Guide – 2011-12 Citation Guide. http://www.library.hbs.edu/guides/citationguide.pdf
