Global Competitiveness: Role of Supply chain Management
By Prof. Shailendrakumar Uttamrao Kale*
Abstract
Business today is in a global environment. This environment forces companies, regardless of location or primary market base, to consider the rest of the world in their competitive strategy analysis. Firms cannot isolate themselves from or ignore external factors such as economic trends. Companies are going truly global with Supply-chain Management (SCM).
SCM & OUTSOURCING
Liberalization, Privatization and Globalization (LPG) of the economies and companies has fuelled the competitiveness among corporate. The drivers of globalization include: decreasing tariffs, improved transportation, communications and information technology, global manufacturing of products and availability of services across markets. These changes have enabled the global competitors to make the products and services available to customers worldwide, and the results have been a proliferation of choices for consumers and a need for the companies to offer greater products and service quality at lower costs in order to remain competitive. Changes in technology and globalization of products and services have also resulted in increasingly dynamic markets and greater uncertainty in customer demand. Consumers have greater access to more goods and services, and the introduction of new products is occurring at a faster pace. SCM tools and techniques are mechanisms that can allow the companies to respond to these environmental changes.
Increased competition has made business look for core

In order to respond most effectively and efficiently to changing world, marketers must have a clear understanding and accurate picture of the directions those changes are taking. Such a picture cannot emerge without a consideration of the evolving nature of business and consumers. The emergence of both enormous technological advances and excessive supply make the prediction of what will happen in the next few years to business in general and the communications business in particular both very easy and very difficult. Very easy because we know that things will have to adapt to the new opportunities and the fact that the customer is king, Very difficult because the things we have grown used to trusting appear to be changing so fast that we cannot understand them anymore, and the approaches that we thought were acceptable to consumers are not so welcome. Much has changed in the way that traditional communications about brands the development of the internet and the World Wide Web has changed the needs of business, and the speed of business. Internet also speeded up the transmission of information around the world that as new approach to products,…

It is Friday evening and you have just sat down at the fireplace after a wonderful meal. You and your spouse open a bottle of your favorite Italian wine and sip away. All the time you are sipping away I bet you never thought once about how that exquisite bottle of wine made it to your living room. Most likely it’s travels involved something like this……a truck ride on a long country road from the vines in Italy to the manufacturer who then sent the wine in containers via truck to a bottling plant who then sent the bottles on a train across Italy to a port that then shipped the wine across the Atlantic Ocean where it was picked up by another truck and taken to an airport to be flown from Florida to Virginia where it was again loaded on a truck who delivered it to your grocery store off the Boulevard in Colonial Heights.…
