MERCOSUR (Mercado Común del Sur) or Southern Common Market, it is a political and economic agreement which main purpose is to enforce the free movement of goods, services and factors of production between the country members by the elimination of customs and tariffs barriers and any other equivalent restrictions. MERCOSUR also establishes a common external tariff and the adoption of a common trade policy of the states and with countries associated, MERCOSUR focuses on the agricultural, industrial, communications and monetary factors, all these to ensure that countries in the parties preserve commitment between each other and to strengthen integration. MERCOSUR is integrated by 5 countries and 1 country to be ratified my member state legislatures (Bolivia), the five members are Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. MERCOSUR also have associated members that benefit in some way from this Trade Agreement (Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico). (Mercosur.int, 1992)

Venezuela has a population of 28.4 Million people according and is described as one of the richest countries in South America due to its large oil reserves which account for roughly 95% of export earnings (cia.gov, 2014); Venezuela has been part of MERCOSUR since 1999 but was formalized in 2012, since Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias became president, with his socialist and revolutionist ideas. Hugo Chavez remained as president till his death (2012) and was replaced by his very trusted Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro; he was named the President of MERCOSUR in 2013.

This agreement, signed in 1992 effective January 1, 1994, created one of the world’s largest free trade zones. The anticipated benefit of having NAFTA was to create jobs in the three countries, for economic growth for the countries involved, and to give consumers better pricing and selection of goods desired to purchase. Since its inception in 1994, this free trade agreement has continued to be controversial, depending on the perspective in which it is being evaluated. * Regional Trade Agreements link individual countries or regions, and are a good arrangement between equal partners with similar-sized economies. But when a rich country has a trade agreement with a poor one, the richer, stronger economy always benefits – particularly in Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), which often remove the poor country’s right to use tariffs and quotas to protect its own industries and farms from cheap imports.…

Zip-6 management has been approached with a proposition to buy out a Venezuelan soft drink manufacturer and bottler. The selling price, however appears to be slightly below book value for the assets. There are wide spread concerns that Zip-6 should consider when making a decision to do any business in Venezuela. Currently the concerns include a weakening of democratic institutions, political polarization, a politicized military, rampant violent crime, overdependence on the petroleum industry with its price fluctuations, foreign exchange controls that discourage private-sector investment, high inflation, a decline in the quality of fundamental human rights, and widespread scarcity of consumer goods.(cia.gov) Below is a report detailing my investigation of the legal, political, and economic climate in that country that Zip-6 management needs be made aware of.…
