In the novel, ‘Q and A’ written by Vikas Swarup, there are several interesting characters. One interesting character in the novel would be Ram Mohammad Thomas, who is also the main character. Swarup’s purpose in writing the novel was to teach us that people (in India) can be very prejudiced towards others of a lower cycle or those from a different religion. He also wants to teach us that we need to persevere in order to overcome obstacles and to teach us about the value of wisdom and trust. Swarup uses a range of techniques to develop his idea.
‘Q and A’, a novel written by Vikas Swarup is about Ram Mohammad Thomas, an 18 year old boy who was arrested for participating in a quiz show. After he was rescued by ‘Smita’, a lawyer, he starts telling her aspects of his extraordinary life story which helped him win the quiz show.
An interesting character in the novel is Ram Mohammad Thomas. Ram Mohammad Thomas is an 18 year old orphan boy who is smart, hardworking and has a vivid memory. He lived most of his 18 years in poverty and goes through many obstacles. Ram is an interesting character because he shows us the prejudice in India throughout his many experiences and name, he also perseveres in order to overcome obstacles and his vivid memory and descriptions show that despite his poverty, he poses a unique form of intelligence which helps him to survive.

Swarup uses dialogue to show the prejudice against his name through Godbole who says, ‘Ram Mohammad Thomas, what kind of nonsense name is that, mixing up all the religions?
