Interactive Oral on History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters
How has your understanding of culture and context of the work developed though the interactive oral?

Our interactive oral was about Julian Barnes’ ‘History of the world in 10 and a half chapters’. Although I did not contribute as much as I should have, others in my class came up with some brilliant ideas. Much of the discussion revolved around the period of history that Julian Barnes’ wrote this book in and how it affected the way he said things, the language and techniques he used and the post-modernism ‘freedom’ he had to explore. Some people noticed links between the issues in the work and our own culture/ experiences, for instance, the terrorist attack in chapter 2 and the terrorist attacks that go on in modern times. I totally agreed when someone said ‘It’s because history repeats itself’, and I think that is one of the main themes in the novel.
The point I made to the group is what I had noticed, and that was the way religion, faith and belief had influenced the novel just like the impact on the world they have had in real life. I also mentioned that I thought one of the themes was about ‘perspective’ and how views can change depending on faiths and experiences. Barnes used different points of view throughout the work to show this. The last chapter ‘The Dream’ is all about what people ‘perceive’ to be as ‘heaven’, and as perception changes the actual heaven in the novel changes to accommodate this. I suppose this is true in real life terms, some people see what they want to see or might ‘perceive’ something different to someone else in the same way that we don’t know if ‘truth’ is real, it’s all subjective.
Some of the discussion was about the different literary techniques Barnes used, before this, I didn’t realise there were so many. He used techniques such as metanarrative, epistolary, anachronisms, mimesis, vignettes, lots of symbolism, and also a lot of intertextual references (which mostly refer to the bible).

Marian Anderson was born on February 27th, 1897. She was the oldest of three sisters. Marian Anderson revealed her vocal talent as a child, but her family could not afford to pay for formal training. So her parents decided it was best to let her join the choir at the Union Baptist Church at the age of six. Then at the age of 13, Marian joined the senior choir. Within that time period Marian was also focused on attending her local high school until she was then notified that she was rejected because she was an African American. So Marian decided that it was best for her to attend the music high school that was located in Pennsylvania .Members of her church congregation raised funds for her to attend the music school for a year. As Marian impressed everyone with her talented voice her father decided it was best to surprise her with a piano that then meant so much to her. Mainly because she knew her parents couldn’t afford to pay for professional lessons so she decided to learn on her own. Furthermore, Marian Anderson commitment to her music and her choice as a singer very well impressed the rest of her choir the Union Baptist Church. They then gathered together and raised enough money, about $500, to pay for Anderson to train under Giuseppe Boghetti, a respected voice teacher. During her two years of studying with Boghetti, Anderson won a chance to sing at the Lewiston Stadium in New York after entering a contest organized by the New York Philharmonic Society. Other opportunities soon followed. In 1928 she performed at Carnegie Hall for the first time, and eventually she was then on tour around the world performing. Much of Marian’s life would eventually see her breaking down obstacles for an African-American performer. For example, in 1955 she became the first African-American singer to perform as a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Although Marian Anderson was…

Oral history is the collection and study of historical information with people having personal knowledge of past events. In the article “ Movement Without Aim,” Ronald J Grele discussed how the world views oral history and how it should not be taken seriously. Grele formed a strong argument due to the way he debated the irrelevance and how unsuccessful oral history is in the modern world.…

An excellent example of this is the differing view of religion. Josh becomes aware of the fact there is no God early in the book. However instead of telling his father he no longer wants to go to Sunday mass, Josh continues to attend Mass with his family to avoid disappointing his father. “No, God was all in our minds. Or at least he’s in the minds of the people around me, but he’s not in mine, not anymore. It’s easy to say those things in my head. No one hears but me, and certainly not my father, standing beside me.” (p55)…

I got the pleasure to observe a ninth grade boy in a World History Class. I will refer to this student as B. B is a fourteen year old Latino young man who lives in a broken home. From what I learned from the other teachers, B’s family has learned that his younger sister has cancer and will be spending the holidays in the hospital. After the news of his sister hit him, his behavior has gotten more and more distracting. He said to the co-teacher, “My life sucks at home and my parents are constantly at the hospital.” This is a young man who is starving for attention and will get it any way he can.…

For my oral history project I wanted to interview my grandmother. But when it came time to do the interview our schedules did not meet up. Then I decided to interview my mother, I wanted to see what she believed then and now about gender. I knew it was going to be a bit different than my views, because we had different experiences in our life. My mother grew up in the Dominican Republic and at the age of eighteen she moved to the United States of America with her younger brother. When here they faced obstacles, my mother found it difficult to learn a new language and to adjust her new lifestyle without her mother even though she had her brother. Her brother Roberto faced tribulations with the people who he associated with, that eventually they…

In my paper I will be comparing and contrasting two literary works of a short story and a poem. The short story and poem I chosen to compare and contrast is “Story of the Lost Son” (Gospel of Luke) and “The Boxer” (Paul Simon and Brue Woodley. On my paper I will be writing about the similarities and differences between the short story “Story of the Lost Son” and the poem “The Boxer”. My paper will be given you the insights on a short story and poem can be similar in one way, but also different in another. In the short story of “Story of the Lost Son” it was about a poor father with two sons and the youngest son wanted to go out in the world on his to get what was coming to him. In the poem “The Boxer” you have a poor boy who want to leave home and go out in the world and make something for his self but couldn’t because he didn’t have the money for it.…
