Instant Gratification
Chow, Charleen Instant Gratification and Apathy
I do not think that instant gratification causes apathy. In
The Brave New World
, the citizens of the World State take soma in order to break free from the worries of the society and to satisfy their need for pleasure. This causes the people to be vulnerable to whatever ideals the government wants them to believe. They do not have any original ideas because whatever capacity is left in their minds are filled with the thoughts the government chooses. They are apathetic towards everything except ways to feel pleasure.
With the invention of smartphones and being able to have whatever you want at your fingertips, it is hard to think of a life without instant gratification. However, we have everything except for apathy. Now, more than ever, it is apparent that people are using this technology to find what they care about and their passion. More and more students want to major in engineering. Unlike
The Brave New World
, we are able to find our passion.
I know that I'm guilty of overusing my smartphone. I’ve noticed that I have a habit of just looking at my screen for no reason. In my mind I would think that I'm checking the time, but I've noticed that right after looking at the screen, I hadn't checked the time. Just looking at it gives me a sense of security. Although I consider my smartphone as an important part of my life, I still care about things even after I get the satisfaction of looking at my screen. I have passions for cooking, working with children, and beauty. Although we have such easy access to everything, we do not let that take so much control over our lives that we stop caring about the more important things.

Since the society is fixated on always being happy they use certain methods which are seen as taboos and even norms in some societies of our current world. The use of Soma, which is a hallucinogenic antidepressant drug, keeps the people taking the drug “happy”. People take this drug to go on “holiday”, which ends up being a hallucinogenic trip to escape the current realities and moods that seem to be bothering or irritating the person. Although this society kept as a utilitarian society, the citizens are still human, even though genetic engineering is used, Unhappiness and irritation sets in, then the person refuses to experience unhappiness, the drug then keeps the people from wonder and appreciation of beauty, which could only be achieved from knowing the exact opposite of what the drug puts on the person. Humanity in this book must first know to be unhappy which would then create and appreciate…

Through out historical manipulation many governments have tried to control citizens through many different ways. Furthermore, none of those civilizations have came close to the amount of control that the government had over its’ people in George Orwell’s 1984 . The technique that the government used were psychological manipulation over people .The government or the Big Brother bombards the citizens of Oceana with rules and regulations that cause the people to be anti-individualistic.The people are made to follow the laws in order to avoid the harsh penalties for not following the law. A crime which is commonly commmited is thought crime . A thought crime was any thought that is found in Big Brother’s ideology. Not only does this control the people all over through the people’s actual thoughts (psychological manipulation) but it also dictates them physically through how Big Brother determines if someone is committing the crime of thought .The government determines the crime of thought by having cameras every where in the city so that the big brother is allways aware of psychological changes in the citizens ,so its that when Big Brother is Watching You the government is able to control the changes psychology of poeple .…

As an American culture we thrive on gratification As Eliot Aronson says, “We Americans seem to thrive on competition; we reward winners and are disdainful of losers.” When the United States was hunting for Saddam Hussein and Osama Bin Laden, they were determined and were not going to give up; they were the “alpha male” in pursuit of win. When they “killed” Osama Bin Laden, the subsequent reaction of the public personally sickened me. The gargantuan number of people in the streets celebrating the death of a human being seemed inhumane to me and somewhat immature. Yes, it is something to be happy about--an evil human being is no longer able to harm the human race, but this doesn’t condone dancing in the streets in your underwear.…

The day started well. My morning class kept my mind preoccupied so I had no thoughts whatsoever of checking my phone. However after class was my first encounter with how much media is actually programmed into my mind. I was standing in line at Bear Necessities when all of the sudden I pulled my phone out of my pocket. Before looking at it I quickly slid it back into my pocket and came to a realization; that anytime I am not actively doing something, I get a sudden urge to pull out my phone. I had never realized it until that moment, but as I thought back I came to realize that it is true, and not just for me but for all people. I then walked downstairs in the PSU and found a seat. I decided that this would be a perfect time to people watch and as I looked around it seemed that everyone was plugged into some sort of media. Whether it was their phones, mp3 players or laptops, everyone was silent just staring at their device of choice. After I was done making my observation, I started to eat my breakfast as usual. However about ten minutes later, as I got caught up in my routine I failed to notice one thing, that I was staring at the TV watching sportscenter highlights. I couldn't understand how I hadn't immediately realized what I was doing, and it left me almost dumbfounded for a moment before I got up and moved to a spot where I couldn't see the TV.…

According to Dominick, the Uses-and-Gratifications Model posits that audience members have certain needs or drives that are satisfied by both non-media and media sources. The uses and gratifications then can be classified into six categories, one of which is cognition, which means the process of knowing something. The new media enables the government to provide services online, which boosts convenience for the people.…

The Uses and Gratification Theory is a theory by Blumer and Katz in which proposes that media users play an active role in choosing and using the media. It says that users take an active part in the communication process and are goal oriented in their use of the media. Blumer and Katz suggest that media users seek particular sources that best fulfills their needs and that they must make choices to satisfy these needs.…

    Living In The Moment

The sad truth is that living in the moment is not something we are taught in our lives neither something that is much talked about. We hear it every now and then from wise old people but we don’t know what they really mean by it. If we were all to be more present in our lives everything we do would echo that notion. Our every action would come from place of pure focus and attention. We would no longer be dominated by our never ending thoughts. We would go for what we want because not going for what we want because of what might happen next is something people not living in the moment think about it.…

    Human Desire

Human desires are defined as the sexual appetite or a sexual urges of human beings. Since excessive desire always makes people lose themselves, it is considered as one of the root of all evils; with that comes a question: can we human beings control our excessive desires? I find my answer in J.M.Coetzee’s novel “Disgrace”-- human beings can never check their excessive desires. Because instincts and human natures are always used as excuses for wrongful sexual desires. Also, our willpowers are so weak but our animal urges are so easy to be satisfied that the irresistible temptation can break our moral baseline easily. Moreover, the venting of desires can make people feel excited and content, and forget all the troubles, like alcohol or drugs, are hard to be cut off. David Lurie, the protagonist in the novel “Disgrace”, is exactly a man who cannot control his excessive desire. David’s sexual relationships with Melanie Isaacs, Bev Shaw, and the streetwalker exactly showed that human beings couldn’t curb their wrong desire. Although some people may say that they have no sexual desire problem, we cannot say that they have successfully controlled their desire, because they do not have excessive desires or are not tempted, once they sink into the abyss of wrong desires, they also cannot control themselves.…

The engineering field I have chosen is Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical engineering is a very broad field; mechanical engineers have the opportunity to work in a wide spectrum of fields. Some mechanical engineers can work for a company testing and improving upon their products. Mechanical engineers love to take things apart and to find out how they work. This being the basis for mechanical engineering it gives a mechanical engineer many options so you won’t ever be bored. Mechanical Engineers rely heavily on Mathematics and Physics. As these are essential in designing and producing a product Mechanical engineers have to be precise in their calculations because working in such industries as Aerospace, Automotive Technology ,Electronics, and product development if they are not you can serious injure or even kill someone. Mechanical Engineers also have to be able to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, blueprints and computer generated reports. Mechanical Engineers have to study equipment failures to diagnose faulty operation. Other responsibilities vary from company to company. However, in general the field of Mechanics encompasses everything that involves motion.…
