Insanity In Hamlet

Throughout the madness that embodies Hamlet, a playwright written by none other than William Shakespeare, readers are taken on a prolific journey of the unique characteristics that outline Prince Hamlet himself. The play, set in Denmark during Elizabethan times, amplifies Prince Hamlet’s revenge on his uncle, Claudius, who has strangely married his mother in absence of his father after his mysterious death. Claudius has murdered his own brother for his own benefit of seizing the throne. When a ghost appears on a dark night outside of Elsinore Castle, Prince Hamlet observes that it is his father’s spirit, and it is speaking to him. The ghost proceeds to inform Hamlet that it is Claudius who murdered him, and orders Hamlet to seek revenge immediately. For the duration of Hamlet’s boiling insanity that is brought upon his surroundings and sarcastic lifestyle, he uses his judgement to carry him through the various encounters and family predicaments. The sarcasm observed in Hamlet’s character is portrayed in his responses to those he associates with in acting without manners or a filter. His inappropriate behavior derives from his inability to control his emotions. Hamlet cries, "Thrift, thrift, horatio! The funeral baked meats... the marriage tables." (1.2.179-80) Hamlet is referring to the brisk way his mother remarried after his father’s death. He is ordering Horatio to bring turkey which is a symbol of thanksgiving and being thankful with one's family. Prince Hamlet is being sarcastic about his happiness and graciousness for his mother’s betrayal towards him.
