Informative Speech: Are We Too Persuasive?
Overall, I believe my informative speech was a success and the same is true about my group’s presentation. During the peer review session, people doubted my group’s ability to stay informative and not include persuasive statements, especially since Jamie’s speech informed the group of pros for raising minimum wage and Fayth shared the cons. Luckily, they were both able to stick to the facts and not include their own opinions. Since I spoke on the history of minimum wage, it was difficult to do anything but inform, so I do not believe I have to worry about my speech becoming too persuasive. Our group spoke on a question of policy, “a question about whether a specific course of action should or should not be taken” (Lucas 315). Questions of policy …show more content…
These types of speeches should be presented in topical order, which almost every group succeeded at; I would have rearranged the order in which some group members presented. With informative speeches, it is imperative to underestimate what the audience knows. While obvious to the speaker, some listeners may not understand acronyms or technical terms used. Some speeches under-informed, so I zoned out, as I was unable to follow, since I had no background knowledge of some of the more intricate details. One speech stuck with me as it included lots of pathos, also known as, “emotional appeals” (349). While pathos is usually reserved for persuasive speeches, the speaker attacked a topic other than the one he was informing the audience on. He bent the parameters of the speech guidelines to gain the audience’s attention, but overall was better able to inform because of it. I am interested to see what the persuasive speeches bring, as I saw lots of persuasion in the informative speeches; statements such as “I believe that…” and “I think…” found their way into speeches that were not supposed to have any bias. Overall, we gave informative speeches but we have room to

    1. Select a topic, which is a problem of current interest that requires your audience to TAKE ACTION. Avoid overworked topics with which most audiences are already familiar with. Pick what you are or will be passionate about. As you choose your topic, made sure you select an issue that you believe in enough to do something about yourself AND something that you would like others to believe in and do! Keep in mind that you have to PERSUADE us to take ACTION – not just: “believe” in your topic. Try to pick a charitable organization or something that need help by your community.…

The statistics you provided kept me engaged in the speech which is a bonus but maybe you could have grabbed the audience attention again in the middle of your speech with a question or maybe just stating one of your stats with a high aggressive tone. One thing I also think you could have done better is how you included your fallacies, you really just added them in your conclusion but I think you could have squeezed at least one of them in the middle of the speech rather than stating them back to back in your conclusion. All in all I thought it was a successful…

Persuasive speeches have been the most challenging speeches in this class for me. The goal is to influence the belief of an audience, convincing them to choose a side. The first persuasive speech I done I was nervous for some odd reason. When it comes to informative speeches I can talk a lot, but it’s different with persuasive speeches. Gaining the attention of the audience enough to persuade them is the major key to a good persuasive speech. Speech 3 was the longest persuasive speech being four to six minutes and it seemed to be the longest. With persuasive speeches, you want to provide the audience with enough information so they’ll be able to choose a side, most likely the side you’re arguing for.…

Some topics are easy to classify: a speech that urges you to donate blood is attempting to change or reinforce your behavior. The speech which identifies what donated blood is used for within the community would be an informative speech. A speech which discusses different world religions would be a speech to inform; a speech which advocates your own religion would be a speech to persuade. The line is not always clear: a demonstration of how to brush your teeth correctly (informative) versus the speech on the importance of good dental care (persuasive), for example.…

On August 26th, IHCDA is will be hosting the Indiana Housing Conference at the J.W. Marriott and are pleased to announce that our keynote speaker will be the distinguished photographer, Tom Casalini. We wanted to highlight his background before discussing his current project we are looking to showcase. Tom attended Indiana University and New York Institute of Photography. After working in Georgia for a period of time, he eventually returned to Indiana as Indiana’s official state photographer. ‘Ordinary Heroes’ and ‘Famous Hoosiers’ are a couple galleries that he has previously completed which attest to his ability to portray symbolic figures on a personal level. In his piece ‘Ordinary Heroes’ he captures the individuality of Medal of Honor recipients and highlights who they are as people in street clothes, just as normal people who have performed admirable services of duty for their country. In his piece ‘Famous Hoosiers’ he captured Indiana natives like Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Fuzzy Zoeller, John Mellancamp, John Wooden, Jim Davis and more to celebrate some of the most acclaimed Hoosiers and their way they represent Indiana through their industries. Tom has a studio in Zionsville we were able to catch up with him at and talk to him about…

I plan on using this to be adequately prepared with concise knowledgeable information when attending a conference such the national institute of leadership and success on issues affecting the Dayton community for fall. In this context, I would approach a public speaking event knowing that I would have to build and maintain credibility while introducing information to the audience. I would focus on the central route of persuasion of elaborating on important points that will be used for discussion. This would be the complete opposite if I wanted to persuade kids about the importance of Firefighting. In this interaction, I plan wearing firefighter gear. The kids will be enamored/influenced with how I look so the information I give will not have to be as detailed since I am relying on things other than my actual speech to convey the message I want to get across. I enjoyed this semester learning about Social Psychology and all it…

Writing in the form of a persuasive speech was the best method of communicating my purpose and contention (that we simply accept what the majority and masses do as ‘the norm’ and conform to said norm without even thinking twice about it and that in doing this, we limit our ability to be individuals) to the audience as I am able to use expressive skills such as voice and facial gesture to strengthen and support my arguments and am also…
