General Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: By the end of my speech, the audience will believe that ADHD is over diagnosed in America and that the side effects of the medication are negative, causing some people behavioral problems in the future.
Central Idea: America has glorified the diagnosis of disorder in order to create a reason for the misbehavior of their children.
I. Introduction
1. Attention-getter I was in Wal-Mart last week and I saw a mother of 3 trying to navigate through the store with all 3 children running in different directions. She seemed to be have a very difficult time managing them. People were staring at them, and then at the mother trying to figure out why she was allowing them to act the way they were. She was practically ignoring the poor behavior. It seemed as though there would be no punishment for these misbehaving children. I watched the running and the screaming and the ignoring go on for about 3 minutes as I shopped, and was generally appalled at the lack of discipline involved, on both the mothers side as well as the side of the children. It was not until one of the children ran into another persons cart that the mother finally took action. She told them that she was going to make them take their medication when they got home, and then put them in time out. 2. Thesis and Preview of Main Points Misbehaivior in children is caused far more by a lack of behavior control from parents than from ADHD. Parents rely increasingly on medications for ADHD to control behavior. When behavior is controlled by medication, children learn how to interact with others in a vastly different way. The medications for ADHD limit the abiltity of the mind to learn lessons interactively, potentially causing behavioral problems in the future. The approach to a child with a lack of discipline must be one of gradual increase in treatment methods, beginning and reinforcing throughout the process the
