How many of you have heard of the dog breed Shiba Inu?

I thought this would be an interesting thing to talk about because many times I'm stopped when I'm with my dog and people are curious about her breed. So today I will tell you about the history of the Shiba Inu's, their characteristics (what they look like) as well as their personality's.

History

The Shiba Inu is an ancient Asian dog breed brought from China to Japan several thousand years ago. According to the website dog-breed-info, recent DNA testing confirmed that this breed is one of the oldest dog breeds.

No one is exactly sure how they got their name. Shiba can be translated as "small" in Japanese so the name could simply mean small dog.

Shina Inu's originally were hunting dogs used to hunt small game and birds. Now they are primarily kept as pets both in Japan and the United States. Today it ranks as Japan's most popular dog. The first Shiba in the United States was brought here in 1954 by an armed service family however it wasn't until 1992 that the breed was recognized as stated by myshiba.com

Characteristics
Moving onto their characteristics...Many people who see a Shiba for the first time notice right away that they look slightly different then most dogs. Anyone who owns a Shiba will get used to people saying "He looks just like a fox!" They weigh between 17-23 pounds and their height is about 13 to 16 inches. Shiba's frame are compact with well-developed muscles. They have broad heads with pointed muzzles, dark noses, and pointed ears. They have dark, triangular eyes that have an intelligent and observing gaze. They have thick necks, well developed chests and strong backs. Their tails curl up over their back.

Their thick coats are usually red, black or tan. They have a waterproof coat and because of this they shouldn't be bathed often because soap can strip their natural coats.

According to shibas.org they can live as long as 15 years.

Then eventually Britain took the dogs from Greece and started breeding them there in Britain. Finally, they ended up in Rome after they invaded Britain and took the dogs. This ancient breed has been known by a variety of names throughout the centuries. Originally called the "Canis Melitaeus" in Latin, it has also been known in English as the "ancient dog of Malta," the "Roman Ladies' Dog," the "Maltese Lion Dog." The origin of the common name "Cokie" is unknown, but is believed to have originated in the mid-1960s on the U.S. East Coast and spread in popular use. This breed has been referred falsely as the "Bichon", as that name refers to the family ("small long-haired dog") and not the breed. The Kennel Club officially settled on the name "Maltese" for the breed in the 19th century.…
