The holiday of Halloween is coming up, and that’s getting everyone pretty excited. Halloween is scary, thrilling, sweet, and is packed with candy. We celebrate it just like any other major holiday. But the honest truth is, what is Halloween? To start, the day of this event is on October 31st every year. In class on the 26th I was running a lot of thoughts through my head. The topics that I thought up were: Automobiles; How to get off my butt and go do something; Easier learning options; How the government messes everything up; How to become a cowboy; How to control time; How to become a space traveler; Halloween’s Origins and Why americans are so serious about holidays. I chose Halloween and its origins, because I decided that it was the only …show more content…
Spending the High School period listening to the origin of Halloween was truly entertaining. I wanted to know all about it, so I decided to research a little bit. I poked around on the mystifying thing called the internet, and I found some pretty wacky things, and all of them did not match up to my thesis. To explore and see if any of my family knew anything about Halloween, I asked each one of them what they thought it was based on. The best, and funniest answer I got was from my smallest sibling, he is 10 years old, and he said, “Halloween is where you go get candy, and eat it and get diabetes.” Halloween is actually a religious event. It started around 2000 years ago in Ireland by a religious group called the Celtics. They believed that on Halloween, or Hallows’ Eve, the spirit world will open, and allow ghosts from relatives come and visit them. They used costumes to scare away the relatives that they did not want to come into the village. That is where we get costumes from. The Celts or Celtics created Halloween and their tradition spread throughout all of Europe. October 31 marked the end of their harvesting season and their Celting new year. October 31st was also thought of a time between years where the souls of the dead walked the earth. After the people lit huge bonfires to drive the dead away from the living. The Catholics frowned upon what was happening so the Vatican merged it with a church sanctioned holiday and it became All Saints Day. All Saints Day was also known as Hallowmas where Hallow meant holy or saintly and mass meant mass of the saints. The night before was known as All Hallows Eve, which gradually became known as Halloween. The people from Ireland came to America and with them came their traditions. On Halloween children wore masks and played tricks on people in their neighborhood. Gradually playing tricks got out of hand and turned into outright vandalism. Back in the 1930’s if you did not give children candy they would trash your house that is where we got the phrase “Trick or Treat”.…

Halloween night is an easier social event because one’s responsibilities are reduced. Halloween night creates pressure in what you wear, but if someone is in disguise, no harm is committed. If someone does not like the costume worn, because of being in disguise, none can judge anyone. For example, someone wears a Darth Vader costume and another person thinks it is dorky, no one will know who is under the costume. Whereas, wearing a terrible dress or tux may declare someone “the most embarrassing”. For example, a girl slips and falls, where she spills Kool Aid on her dress, and is laughed at by the student body. In addition, people have deceiving facades for entertainment. Even if you are acting differently, wearing face paint, or dressing…
