As an Accounting major, I am very interested and have become fond of learning about the varying business aspects within the sports industry. As a result, I decided to conduct my interview with a professional that is associated with the business operations of athletics. The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee. She has worked with the University of Miami for the past 20 years and is currently the Chief Fiscal Officer for the Department and is a member of the executive management team. “Crippin' is a choice, but it's forever. You may slow down, but you will always be down forever.” (Washington 1969). Founded in Los Angeles, California in 1969 by Raymond Washington and Stanley Tookie Williams III; the Crips are now a loosely connected network of individual sets. Through the years the gang has grown to be one of the largest and most powerful gangs in the United States, currently with over 30,000 gang members. Members of the are known to be involved in murders, robberies, drug dealing, and many more criminal activities. The gang is notorious for its flamboyant use of the color blue. Wearing blue any and everywhere, gang members often get heckled by the police. The Crips are known to have an intense and bitter rivalry with the Bloods and various surrounding gangs. They are also locked in an ongoing struggle over the drug trade with the Vice Lords. Raymond initially called the gang the Baby Avenues in an attempt to emulate older gangs and the activities carried out by the Black Panthers; Raymond was fascinated with the movement of the Black Panthers. The Gang renamed itself the Avenue Cribs and then took on the nickname the Cribs, because of the young age of members. The name Crips was first introduced in the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper in a description by crime victims of young men with canes, as if they were crippled. Resources state, it could have just been a misspelling error, either way the name stuck, and the Crips were officially Born Gangsters. Stanley Tookie Williams, generally acknowledged as co-founder of the Crips, started his own gang called the Westside Crips. Crip meaning “Community Revolution In Progress”. The Crips became popular throughout southern Los Angeles as more youth gangs joined; at one point they outnumbered non-crip gangs by 3 to 1, sparking disputes with non-crip gangs, including the L.A. Brims, Athens Parks Boys, the Bishops and the Denver Lanes. The Crips eventually…

I sat down to interview my high school basketball coach over the break to see what it took and how long it took for him to get where he is today in the coaching world. It took him 5 years to get his bachelor degree in sports management from Oklahoma State University. Coach Thomlinson has been coaching for 8 years and teaching for 6, the first two year he started off coaching was an assistant coaching job at Oklahoma Christian University then moved to Luther High School for 4 years and finally moved to Bethel High School where he became my head coach. He is a basketball coach and teaches health wellness. A typical work day for him are the hours 730a.m to around 4p.m out of season and in season the hours consist of about 730a.m to around 10p.m, the in season works consists of practice, planning practice, teaching, game film, game film on opponents, strategizing, and of course coaching the actual games. Out of season work just consists of teaching, practice, and finding out on want we need to work on to get better. Out of season he has the whole evening off with the family and then most of the summer with the family other than that little bit of time that is taken up by summer basketball camps but when basketball season starts “my team becomes my family” Coach Thomlinson said. The dream job for me is of course Duke University he said jokingly, But in all seriousness the dream coaching job for me would just to have a great group of kids that are coachable and of course a winning record every ear wouldn’t hurt. The highest dollar check I could get now in high school basketball would just depend on what school I went to and what their budget is, but more than likely a coaching job in Texas for high school would pay more than a high school coaching job in Oklahoma. The pros of teaching and coaching are that you can make sure that your players are being more respectful in class, keeping up in their classes, and…
