Influencing group communication

Group communication can be influenced in several ways. There are five bases of power that can affect day to day business and personal communications. They are coercive power, reward power, legitimate power, expert power, and referent power. Every power can be found in the workplace, as well as in personal situations. The following will discuss these situations in detail and how the bases of power affect communication within the organization. Coercive power is defined as “Authority or power that is dependent on fear, suppression of free will, and/or use of punishment or threat, for its existence. Coercive power is a formal power that is based on fear. This type of power could affect communication in a negative way. Forms of coercive power could be threats of non-payment, a threatened strike, a threat of litigation, and a threat to go public. All of these have the element of fear. Reward power is defined as “Extent to which an entity can control the dispensing of rewards or benefits.” Reward power is the opposite of coercive power and it can be used as a tool to persuade. The rewards or benefits can be used to influence others. The incentive could be money, and to some it could be recognition. An organization utilizes this power to influence an individual’s decision to accept employment with a company. Reward power is formal and “compliance achieved based on the ability to distribute rewards that others view as valuable.” Legitimate power is defined as “Fair or just power derived from a job, position, or status.” Legitimate power in leadership is the power one receives by position or promotion in an organization. This is also one way the leader is distinguished from a follower, based on the greater rights and responsibilities than others.
