Introduction to College Writing 1
Spring Semester, 2011

I am in my first semester of college this year. I am the first person in my family to attend college. I am very proud of myself. I don’t know if I would be here today if it weren’t for some of the people in my life. Looking back now I will have to say the three biggest influences were my kids who I want better for, my best friend who has believed in me even when I wasn’t sure of myself, and my step dad who has always encouraged me to further my education.
My kids are the biggest reason for me being here right now. They are my motivation to keep bettering myself one goal after another. I want so much more for them then I had. I want them to have more options in life and more doors available for them. I want them to take their education seriously and not just something they have to do until their eighteen. I have read somewhere in the past that statistics show that children who have parents who have attended college are more likely to graduate high school and go on to college. I hope by seeing me further my education and reach my goals in my career and in life, that I can someday be their influence to better themselves and reach their goals

She has graduated college herself and got her degree. She has always believed in me even when I didn’t. She has always been able to my strengths and brings them out in me when I could only see my weaknesses. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure and demands of college but she reassured me that I could it and always told me I would do great, and she would be there if I ever needed help, that kind of puts your mind at ease a little bit. I think that’s why she is my best friend and I am grateful for encouragement and

In recent years, universities, especially Ivy League’s such as Yale, Harvard, and Princeton, have failed to uplift to their job. Not only have they halted in educating its students, but it has put them in positions were they are forced into studies they are not even sure they have a desire in. Financing, in particular has taking its positions amongst a high percentage of students, pushing them toward Wall Street jobs, in which they depend on. Acting as a substitute for school, Wall Street lures students in by promising to give them the education that they did not receive in their universities.…

My best friend Sedona Love taught me something this year, something I would never have had seen with my own two eyes until she showed me. She taught me that when I am having trouble at home or life isn’t treating me so well, that she will always be there to listen and give their best input. She may sometimes be sarcastic, silly, goofy, mean, crazy, sometimes plain out embarrassing, and even care too much, but in the long run she is always going to be there to listen and not talk, hear without judging, and be there with nothing in return. In class sometimes she can be pretty critical but I know that’s just how our relationship works. I may get called silly, stupid, a dumb blonde, an idiot, but when I need my best friend the most I know that she will be there for me. When I needed a shoulder to cry on or when I needed a hug the most she was always there for me, when I felt there was no sense in life she showed me there was way more to life than I thought. A couple of weeks ago I went into severe anaphylactic shock and she was right there, she brought me my backpack and the things I needed most at the time. She stood up for me when my so called friends were talking behind my back not really knowing what was going on. She was also the only one who cared enough to call me and see how I was doing, she put everything aside just so she could make sure that I was okay. Not…

Knowing that getting a good education for their kids was their first goal encouraged me to work hard in school. Every minute I have spent at Science Park High I have appreciated because I know it is an enormous privilege to get such an excellent education from many insightful teachers. This will also apply to college. Although my siblings all went to high school, they did not go to college and I saw it break each one of their hearts. This will inevitably push me to reach for nothing but greatness in college, to give it me 100 percent and nothing less no matter how hard it…

Now college is like a new turning point for people who have just graduated out of high school and students are very bias about going to college or not. So I think they should go straight into the work force and there are some reasons why student don’t go to college. Students don’t want to go to college because maybe they think of it as a waste of time and that they have no need to go to another school to learn a specific course for 4 years and that they can do it themselves. For examples some artist in the music industry didn’t go to college like J Cole or Rihanna didn’t study music just to be an artist. Some animators are pros just from teaching themselves instead of learning it at colleges. Another reason would be that some…

The belief that liberal arts is extra, just for fun, not useful, worthless, a waste of money, unproductive, futureless, (any or all of the above) is quite frankly a ludicrous claim. Many adults have engrained in their minds, sure that it’s fine to take as a course in school, but it’s never going anywhere, it’s never going to land a career, a job, a lifestyle. The stereotype for ‘worthless’ majors is always liberal arts degrees (whether is philosophy, art history, or Russian literature, they have all been thrown under the bus). In actuality, liberal arts degrees and careers are crucial in today’s day and age, and can often lead to well-paying jobs. When a student decides to go to art school, they are often faced with criticism and other people…

One day, while I was laying peacefully on my bed, my mother came in with a letter from Florida A&M University. I didn't really want to speculate anything because a few days before I received a letter from another college saying that I wasn't accepted. Nevertheless I was still excited when I opened it and even more so when I read that I had been accepted. So without much hesitation I packed up and headed to Tallahassee. When I arrived my mother and I took care of registration and a plethora of things you have to manage as a new student. After all the hassles of college registration were completed my mother departed for home and I was left by myself to attend college. What a great feeling! Little did I know what I had on store for the next day, my first in college.…
