Influence On Identity

“If they begin to restrict my movements, I take them off. I am a human being, capable of mimicking anything I see or remember or can imagine.” (ELLEN GILCHRIST, Falling Through Space) What Ellen Gilchrist is explaining is identity. If a person's identity is restricting them from doing something then they will change or “Take it off”, also you are able to mimic anything they see, remember or imagine. Listening to others’ opinions can cause self doubt and pressure for teens to change their identity.

The poster says “This is what beautiful looks like.” and has a picture of a girl in a yellow mask on it. The girls standing by the poster are also wearing yellow masks and trying to do their hair like the girl in the poster. In the text “How does society shape the individual? Other things that can influence our identity are people, hairstyles, clothes and desire for popularity. Peer pressure can also influence our identity. In Elementary school I was quiet and kept to my books but now in middle school I am sometimes still quiet and keep to my books but I sometimes feel pressure to talk more to other students .
