The assessments that I administered to the student began during my second week of practicum at the Francis Lore Elementary School, and were completed over the course of four weeks. There were a total of five assessments that tested my case study participant’s reading and writing skills. The Informal Reading Inventory, which had my student read multiple grade level passages and word lists, allowed me to measure their reading and comprehension level. The Elementary Spelling Inventory, aided me in assessing the students essential skills of phonics, which will indicate what aspects of writing will need to be approached come time for me to make recommendations and a plan for intervention. Ralph Waldo Emerson once said.“Some books leave us free and some books make us free.” In today’s generation if you were to go up and ask a young scholar what was the last book they read and how long ago. Some will surprise you and say last week, or that just the other day they had read a book, but the sad reality is that plenty of those adolescents either won’t be able to tell you or the that time it was it was quite a long time ago. Reading allows us to express ourselves in the utmost potential.…

Using symbolic and auditory messages can help everyone to signal their memory recall process. Many people do not use mnemonic devices as a memorization tool and those are disadvantaged to the people who do. If everyone started to make an effort to use mnemonic devices, people could recall stored information much more efficiently throughout daily life.…

Reading can be such a broad topic in America today. How important is it, why do we read, the questions are endless but to what extent is reading really important? There are so many issues going on around the globe such as illegal immigration, abortion and the new health care reform. Reading is no where near as important as those topics, those issues can change one's life forever and reading is just something we do without even noticing. It comes natural to a human being in the 21st century. In Rick Moody's piece “The Joy and Enthusiasm of Reading” he is arguing that there is no right or wrong way to read. I agree with Moody's opinion that there is no right or wrong way to read something because we all are created differently with different minds which means we all interpret things in a different way.…

In every project there will be pros and cons. There were a couple of instances I felt I should have handle differently by using different approaches in processing uneventful circumstances. For example, the recruitment of volunteers should have been handled by selecting knowledgeable volunteers that cared about supporting academic growth and the love of reading to young children specifically three to five years of age. I asked for volunteers within the church bulletin without any instructions on time frames and the amount of Sundays needed for support. The bulletin read “Shared Reading volunteers needed every Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15p.m. Activities include but not limited to group reading, fluency examples, language development…

Josh believes that he is somewhat of a writer and has written some pretty good stories that his teachers have really liked in the past. When he was asked on his opinion on why people write he responded with "So that people can put their imaginations on paper and see other people's reaction towards them." I find this to be an interesting response personally, and agree but have never thought of it in that kind of way. When he learned to read, he was in Kindergarten and learned by school which later brought him to the point that people have to slow down when they read so that they can fully understand what they are reading. Sometimes there is a book that looks interesting to him, so the way that he finds out if he will read it or not is by reading…

Nowadays, texting is the main source of communication, especially for college students. The way the words are sent in these text messages are usually abbreviated to quicken the process of texting or spell check tends to fix every word for the texters, the person(s) that is texting, to correct the words for you, thus, this may affect the way the student’s academic success.…
