Influence of Digital Media on Education
A great man once said, “If we teach today’s students as we did yesterdays, we are robbing them of tomorrow.” His name was John Dewey. He was an American philosopher, psychologist and educational reformer whose ideas have been influential in education and social reform. This man is the inspiration for many enthusiastic educators, who wish to evolve education as the world around us changes, especially with the rapid reforms bestowed upon the education world through this monster that we call digital media. There is no running away from the fact that digital media has already changed the world. It’s not going to stop altering the world it was created in anytime soon.

So human beings have taken advantage of this fact. Since digital media reaches every corner of the globe, man has learned how to influence tremendous amounts of people through digital advertisements, expressed opinions on blogs, massive video sharing (Youtube), Internet radios (Pandora, Spotify), universal shopping outlets (Amazon, Ebay) and even extremely localized seller/buyer ran websites such as Craigslist. The list is never ending. Digital media has grabbed our society by the horns. For this project I have chosen to analyze the impact of Digital media on education. Numerous communications technologies have been, and will continue to connect the expertise of professional educators. Digital media and the numerous communications technologies are connecting millions of people to:

1. Increase opportunities for a quality education. 2. Increase audience networks to jumpstart a synergistic routine for online/afterschool studies. 3. Easily develop effective studying techniques in younger children, which ultimately set children up for success.Education on Digital Media 4. Construct interactive communication for peer-to-peer studies. 5. Give parents a chance to provide their children with an excellent structured education. 6. Develop online programs that are extremely user

    Over the course of watching Digital Nation, a documentary written and produced by Frontline, I found myself considering the effects that the Internet has had on society since it’s boom in the early 2000’s. At least, I was considering it through the lens of those who do not identify as Digital Natives, like myself. I found the points regarding the effects that the Internet has had on the multiple aspects of life to be understandable when I considered things from a Digital Immigrant’s prospective. To those who remember a time prior to the internet and smart phones, I can see how the current tempo of life in harmony with the internet can seem impersonal and intimidating, especially in regard to how it’s changing the state of education and media. Even so, after considering all the points the documentary had to offer, such as lower grades, mental health, social activity, a general decrease in mental capacity, and attention spans (Dretzin & Rushkoff, 2010), I can’t help but feel as though the internet isn’t necessarily the issue, more so just a new means of scapegoating an age old problem. The extremities of internet immersion to the point of sacrificing one’s physical and mental health, is not the norm and can be avoided through moderation. If anything, it seems as though the resistance of technology in places like classrooms is the deciding factor in plummeting grades.…

    Is there a balance in multimedia education? I disagree. Has the new wave of technology taken over the classroom? With the fast rise of technology, growing every day I agree that electronic media has its place. Today’s society has a balance of electronic educational media readily available. There is no excuse for American not to be well educated. We have students coming out of high school that cannot read or write, but they are graduating. Are we really well educated? Classroom education is becoming outdated, because America is exposed to an overdose of multimedia. The educational media is now on the rise. What did the world do before there were computers, cell phones, texting, video games, twittering, my space, and Face book? Children would rather watch television all day than pick up a book to read. Television requires little to no effort while reading demands active, cognitive interaction. The internet has taken education from the classroom to the comfort of our homes and our jobs, but there must be a balance. Computers, cell phones, video and audio recordings cannot and should not replace our teachers. That is where there must be a balance. With educational media, we can get flexibility in our busy lives. Children have the options to learn to read, write, and teach themselves right from the internet. At the same time, the internet can teach our children things that they should not have access too. With proper parental guidance, educational media can become very helpful. Computer programs have helped children and adults learn to read and speak foreign languages. Internet programs have taught Americans how to become computer knowledgeable. Multimedia education should be used in a good way. It is not good for children to sit in front of computers all day playing games and texting all day from cell phones. America is lacking in communication skills because we think that texting is more important than one on one…
