Kayaking can be a wonderful, relaxing sport, what better place to do it than the scenic, nature filled area of the Indian River Lagoon in Central Florida. We moved to the Sebastian area of Central Florida around five years ago, but we didn't discover what the Indian River Lagoon had to offer until the last two. Now we look forward to the outstanding experience of kayaking on it as often as possible. Whether you have your own kayak or rent one in the area you are sure to have a great time. The lagoon is a great place for beginners because it is so shallow. In the Sebastian area the lagoon is only about a mile across to the other side and most of it is so shallow that you can stand up if you accidently flip your kayak. You can paddle north or…

Early on in World War II, Gato-class boats carried the brunt of the U.S. submarine war. Once combining with 122 other boats of similar class but with thicker pressure hull for increased operating depth, even more damage was done. In essence, World War II submarines were surface ships that could usually travel underwater when need be. Their diesel engines provided them with long range and high surface speed; electric motors powered by storage batteries kept them running while underwater. The only issue was its inability to stay charged for excessive periods of time. Still, in the years of 1945 and 1955, the submarine was transformed as it became a true underwater boat that was easily capable of moving and fighting for weeks on end without needing to rise to the surface for more energy. Such ideas spurred from the Allies capturing German U-boats in World War II, as German progression exceeded that of America’s.…

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were appointed to be leaders of the expedition of the West. Jefferson’s first appointed individual, Meriwether Lewis, was his private secretary, and William Clark was Lewis’s friend, who he suggested for a map maker for the trip to President Jefferson. Both were trusted military leaders as well (Foner and Garraty). Lewis and Clark began recruiting soldiers, boatmen, and interpreters just like me to help build boats, gather supplies, and make a master plan. We boatmen built three boats for this trip: a 55-inch keelboat and two smaller boats called pirogues. A keelboat is a long, flat boat…
