Ineffective and Effective Leadership

Mijares 1 In order to be an effective leader it is essential to possess certain characteristics; I believe that whether or not one obtains these attributes will determine if they will be a successful or unsuccessful leader. A successful leader would most likely obtain specific traits such as loyalty, trustworthiness, and selfishness. On the other hand, an ineffective leader would possess characteristics that include selfishness, greed and disrespectfulness. All of the qualities will ultimately conclude whether they will turn out to be an effective or ineffective leader. To be an effective leader, one must show that they are a worthy person that people can look up to and show respect for. In the book, Lord of the Flies, Ralph is a prime example of an effective leader because he displays very strong leadership qualities as he tries to fulfill his position as chief on the island. Some of Ralph’s leadership qualities are that he is smart and responsible. He demonstrates this when he is determined to keep a fire going and constantly insists that making smoke is the most important thing to do. He is very persistent because he knows that maintaining a fire and producing smoke is the boys of the island only chance of getting themselves rescued and off the island. While on the island for the time being, Ralph makes it appoint to build shelters in case it rains or there is lightening and the boys need protection. He also came up with a very productive drinking system and bathroom system so that he and the rest of the boys on the island do not end up drinking bad water. This shows Ralph’s ability to make right choices and good decisions and it also shows that Ralph not only has himself in mind but the wellbeing of the other boys as well. It is important that an effective leader remains humble and true to their self; this is essential because if not they may lose their way.
