Industry Analysis for Dove
One of Doves direct competitors is Olay. They have six bar soaps and two massaging bath bar soaps. The Olay brand is known as a brand that celebrates beauty outside and within. Their tagline is “Love the skin you are in.” Olay has a bar name Age Defying Moisturizing Bar, which helps reveal younger looking skin. This would be a competition for Dove, since Dove doesn’t have an age defying bar, but instead it has a sensitive skin, which is good for those with sensitive skin. Olay though has no variety in the bar soap products though. Olay was first made out of love in the 1950’s. A husband wanted to make something for his wife because the products she was using were making her skin look greasy and didn’t fit her feminine sensibility. Within five years, Olay was having phenomenal success in South Africa and later on expanded to England, United States, Netherlands, Canada and Germany. They didn’t start with the bar of soap, but that was made later on.
Olay’s target market is women between the ages of 15-65. It is a broad age group but they believe they have a bar of soap for every woman and their need. Their products are more focused on women, whereas Dove has products for both men and woman. Their price ranges from $3.00 - $10.00, depending on what soap or product it is and how many in a pack. They soap come in packs of two or more.
Their celebrity face for Olay Facial Cleansing is Carrie Underwood. She is a famous singer and songwriter who has used Olay for as long as she can remember. Another direct competitor for Dove is Irish Spring. Irish Spring bar soap is produced by Colgate-Palmolive company. There are five different soaps: Aloe, Clean Scrub, Icy Blast, Moisture Blast and Original. They are packed in an environmentally friendly 100-percent paperboard carton, which is 35-percent post-consumer recycled content.
Irish Spring was developed by Colgate-Palmolive, targeting consumers according to their lifestyle patterns and personalities. They identified

Bar soap is seemingly such an unassuming everyday household item. However it isn’t as simple as it may appear. For example, Dove soap is made up of sodium cocoylisethionate, stearic acid, coconut acid, and sodium tallowate. In addition, water, sodium isethionate, sodium stearate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium cocoate or palm kernelate, fragrance, sodium chloride, BHT and titanium dioxide are also used. Now, the once ordinary bar of soap seems so much more complex. To my surprise, many women around the world see a bar of Dove soap even more complex than that. The Dove campaign for Real beauty has inspired many women to think far more critically about something that they would normally not think much about. Since 2004 Dove has tried, “…to celebrate the natural physical variation embodied by all women and inspire them to have the confidence to be comfortable with themselves.”(Dove) Dove has launched a variety of advertisements, video, workshops, and sleepover events to 11 million women throughout the country.…

The second female anti-aging product that I researched was AVEENO Active Naturals Positively Radiant Anti-Wrinkle Cream which retails for $15.99 for 1.7 oz at CVS. According to its packaging, this formula has been clinically proven to soften fine lines and wrinkles as well as improve skin texture by using natural ingredients such as soy. The target audience of this product could not be specifically located. Much like Olay, Aveeno recommends pairing this product with other Aveeno active natural products. Aveeno belongs to parent company Johnson and Johnson.…

With any product comes the possibility of competition. Proctor and Gamble should closely keep an eye on the competitors of the Crest product line, so that they are able to counteract the activities that the competition may do. Competitors for Crest include Colgate, Aim, and several others, although the largest competition is Colgate, a product of the Colgate-Palmolive Company.…

Olay is an American skin care line. It is one of Procter & Gamble's multi-billion dollar brands. For the 2009 fiscal year ended June 30, Olay accounted for an estimated $2.8 billion of P&G's $79 billion in revenue. Olay originated in South Africa as Oil of Olay. Graham Wulff (1916-2008),[1] an ex-Unilever chemist from Durban, started it in 1949. The name "Oil of Olay" was chosen by Wulff as a spin on the word "lanolin", a key ingredient.…

Let’s be honest, how many opportunities does one have to swaddle themselves in rich, velvety, layers of chocolate? Well if you’re the star of a Dove chocolate commercial, every day! Dove’s “Pure Silk” chocolate commercial plays up the appetizing name of their treat by using specific appeals that charm adult women right out of their diets. The writers of the commercial achieve these appeals through the use of words with pleasurable connotations, slow and sultry pace and music, and a beautiful actress.…

First of all, the ethical appeal, or Ethos, in the Olay advertisement is predominantly strong. To begin with, the brand name of Olay has been around for many years. It is trusted by many, and there is a comfort that comes with buying a product that one knows will work. Also, the person in the ad, Carrie Underwood, seems to trust this product because she claims to use this product all of the time. Another way Ethos is strong in this ad is the way she appeals to pop culture. Since Underwood’s fans will see this ad and believe that she uses “Olay Complete,” they too…

Prior to the year 2000 Unilever’s Dove brand has only one product, i.e. beauty bar. The brand name depended upon the functionality benefits of the beauty bar, i.e. moisturizing benefits. In the year 2000 Unilever wanted to introduce various beauty care products under the Dove 's umbrella brand by Brand Extension (pg.no. 258 Kotler, & Lane, 2008 ). As a Masterbrand Dove should create a strong association between other…

Before Unilever transformed Dove into an iconic Masterbrand, it was a functional, recognizable brand. In order to market a new product to consumers, Dove had a competitive advantage. Introduced as a revolutionary form of soap, Dove swept the market in 1957 when it launched its beauty bar, a new formula. The beauty bar removed Dove from the cognition given to a regular bar of soap. It was not ordinary soap, which was now “old-fashioned”; it was a beauty bar that had the ability to moisturize and cleanse while eliminating the usual irritation and dryness received from toilet soap. This differentiation enabled brand awareness for Dove.…

For a brand firmly associated with feminine beauty, Olay has a rather surprising history. The product was actually invented during World War II by South African chemist Graham Gordon Wulff, as a glycerine-based rehydration treatment for Royal Air Force pilots suffering from severe burn injuries. When the war ended, Wulff began to search around for a new career, and teamed up with former advertising copywriter Jack Adams Lowe to attempt to sell the cream to consumers. The pair invented the existence of a mysterious tropical plant which they called the Ulan, from which they claimed their "oil" was derived. Understanding the marketing power of less-is-more, they decided to say as little as possible about the precise purpose of this Oil of Ulan. Instead they called it a "mysterious beauty fluid that makes you look younger", and began selling it door-to-door in South Africa under the auspices of their newly formed company Adams National Industries, based in Durban.…
