Inaccuracies In One Night With The King
Critique: One Night with the King
Julienne Grace Lim
Berea A – Pastor Ang

One Night with the King is a modern retelling of the story of Hadassah or Esther. The directors and producers were able to execute the movie well, however, there were some minor inaccuracies.

In Esther chapter 1:10-11, it says that King Xerxes was in high spirits when he requested for Queen Vashti. In the movie, when the King requested for Queen Vashti, he was not in high spirits, he was broody or thoughtful. It was also not King Xerxes’ idea to request for Vashti, unlike the book implies, it was actually the people and the nobles who requested for Vashti. Another one of these minor inaccuracies can be seen in Esther chapter 5:3 when the King says that he is willing

Document 2-1, “The King of the Congo Writes to the King of Portugal,” addresses King Joao III of Portugal from King Alfonso of Congo about how important Congo relies on their trade system with Portugal. King Alfonso mentions how his power of authority in the kingdom has fallen as materials are becoming scarce, in hopes that the Portuguese will provide them with the necessary goods. As King Joao III continues to ignore King Alfonso’s requests, Congo is corrupted with chaos, diseases, a decline in christian faith, and slave trade. In addition, King Joao has added to the corruption…

P.9 -the yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You dont dies of it. . . . (Poor Father! Of what then did you die?)I think that the yellow star that the Jews were forced to wear, brought up on page 9 of Night, is a very important part of this book. First off, this quote foreshadows his fathers death later in the book. It means that though his thought being identified as a Jew wouldnt harm him, but in the end being Jewish is what killed him. I think this is very important. It shows that even though people knew of the war and what was going on to Jews they could not comprehend that the fact that they are Jewish is what would eventually kill them.…

Esther’s deeply rooted respect for her father is evident from the very first sentence she wrote, “I have just come back from a most wonderful ride with my honored father” and continues throughout the passage, she calls him “a great traveler” and brings him water, intently listens to everything he says. She was particularly excited for the outing because her father was very talkative and taught her a lot, this was special for her because he is “usually taciturn or preoccupied.” How she talks about her father, the great respect she has for him, reveals alone how important this day was for her. When a person idealizes another so much, time spent with them will always be a great experience, regardless of what they do.…
