In Cuban I Was A German Shepherd Analysis

I found that all the stories I've read all semester was intriguing, but the one story that truly stood out to me was "In Cuba I was a German Shepherd" by Ana Menendez. The reason why I would say this is my favorite story all semester is that it's somehow nostalgic, as it slightly pertains to my current situation here in the United States. I enjoyed the way the story was written - moving between dialogue and narration, and exhibiting paragraphs that displayed memories of a distant past. Ana Menendez also incorporates humor to mask underlying issues in the story. Maximo tells jokes to his fellow friends at the park, and as the reader we get a glimpse of what life was like in Cuba through his jokes. You could tell from Maximo's jokes that he was
