Sontag argued that just like paintings and illustrations, photography gives us an incomplete representation to the world, which will likely to be falsely interpreted. Despite providing an “anthology of images”, photographs give us miniatures and glimpses of reality about the world (1). Images taken by the camera cannot fully capture the beauty and reality of the…
The tittle of the book is Fade by Lisa McMann. The main character is Janie. Janie is in her senior year and is going out with a boy named Cable. Cable is one of the main characters as well. The main problem in the story is that there is a sexual predator at Fieldridge High. Captain needs a volunteer to scope out the sexual predator. The job could be risky because nobody in Fieldridge High is talking. The problem in the book causes Janie to make decision. The decision affects many characters in the book and there are many reasonable arguments against and for the decision made.…
Throughout the story "An Uncertain Grace: Photography and the Alchemy of Light and Time" there were seven pictures that were talked about. The article talked about these specific pictures because each photo represents different things and different modes when looking at the image. The five elements in photography are the thing itself, the details, the frame, the time, the vintage point. The images that were shown in the article each represent at least one of the five elements of photography. The article talks about historical events that helped understand things better, as well as stories that helped me understand more of the different moods that an image can bring on.…

"While photographs may not lie, liars may photograph". This line, stated by Lewis Hine, a famous photographer from the late 19th to mid 20th century, is starting to become a phrase that really has some meaning (McClymer, 2011). It was once thought that a photograph told the complete truth. However, in more recent times with the technology of the camera, photographers now have the option to not only stage pictures, but to also go back and retouch them once they are already taken. These two forms of photo manipulation are causing a serious ethical dilemma in the photojournalism world. “Migrant Mother”, a photograph of down and out mom Florence Thompson, taken by photographer Dorothea Lange, is a captivating photo, that at first glance has a major impact…
HOMS Theme Essay Growing up, everyone expects it as this unbelievably spontaneous thing . In Sandra Cisneros book “The house on Mango Street” states that growing up can happen to people variously, in good and bad ways. In the pages 46- 57 there is a lot of growing up in many of the characters especially Esperanza. Esperanza gets her first job, during her break time she mingles with an oriental man; “ He grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth,”(55).…
A year ago, the artist Harrell Fletcher saw the War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, a memorial to what the Vietnamese call the American War. He was so struck by it that he went back with a digital camera to photograph on the sly everything there. This meant mostly magazine and newspaper photographs, and snapshots of Agent Orange victims, captioned. He shot the photographs and the captions separately, at an angle, to cut down on reflections, and in such a way that his pictures make clear that he was there, standing in the museum, taking photographs of photographs that are themselves copies. They look a little like the pictures you find on eBay.…
The content of his photographs was extremely interesting. They were very down to earth and simple. It seemed to me that he just took photos has he experienced things in his life. For example, there were several pictures of cats. A picture of a cat is something everyone…

It is a well-known fact in today’s world that a large percentage of students in college are failing their classes due to the fact that many of them are not worried about making good grades. In Amy Widner’s essay “The Pursuit of Just Getting by,” she shared her opinion about students that think it is cool to not try. “We are not fooling anybody but ourselves.” –Amy Widner. She addresses this issue as well as the ramifications for “practicing” bad habits in college. She goes on explaining the importance of a hard work ethic, skills, and most importantly knowledge. She believes that every student should make the most out of their education by doing all of the work they are assigned, and doing everything to the best of their abilities. Amy later explains since students are paying so much for a college education they should be pursuing…
In general photography is used to trick the audience’s eyes. For example, advertisement is displayed every single day in our lives manipulating the honesty. When a cigarette commercial goes on they have enhanced the color, and edited all the little details that appeals to our emotions, making cigarettes look good. The only problem is cigarette isn’t good for you, but the viewers wouldn’t get that message due to the changes the photographers have made. Following this further Sontag said “… one never understands anything from a photograph.” The reason for that is because photography shows everything but context. Photography gives you a small glimpse of reality, but the realities have been manipulated to the photographer’s idealism.…

In analyzing the contrast between paintings and photographs, Berger begins to express his view on mystification. He suggests that critiques often excessively interpret art by using far-fetched artistic jargon. This imposes a sort of “mystification” rather than direct judgments. Berger then instructs us how to “avoid mystifying the past.”(Berger 147). He switches the focus to the relationships that the paintings express rather than the techniques the artists used.…
