Importance Of Civic Engagement
Final blog post
Criterion A: Disciplinary Grounding/Knowledge
During this educating process I’ve learnt that civic engagement is so much more important than I might have thought. I also learned that civic engagement can be applied in way more than one environment. Before I thought that community was just your neighbor hood, and with dance, golf, and all the other activities our family is involved with we don’t really have much time to go to community meetings or fairs. This week I took some of my learning from week without halls and realized that a community is anywhere. Although this may have already been known by most I now realize that I am involved in civic engagement every day when I go to school and try to participate in activities and

At the beginning of the project if you had asked me what I thought about those things I would have told you that Civic Engagement doesn’t matter and art is just art nothing more and I honestly thought that the entire week was going to be a total waste of my time (in the most respectful way possible to all the great teachers.) On Monday I was astonished by how much I had learnt and the knowledge of the importance of art and civic engagement and how it plays a major role in bring together a community. After this week I can say that not only was it better than regular school I’ve learnt and gained so much knowledge. My thinking on TTP also changed, on the second day when we visited TTP, and I didn’t even know what the project was, I thought “Ya, it’s grea t they bag birds! But how does this have anything to do with school and why should I care. Then I found out the purpose of the park and the legitimate troubles and issues the park needed help solving and I was ready to dive in. My thinking on the solution never really shifted our group was always totally on board with the festival idea (while maintaining an open mind.) We did and on and made tweaks and changes every day. For example at first the festival was just going to include an art workshop, flash mob, and a play (the obvious basics) then we decided to add on a mural that community would create together to strengthen the sense of family and

Scott Peck, author of The Different Drum: Community and Making Peace, describes community as "people living together in both freedom and love." Communities cannot be formed around people (individualists) who are busy satisfying their own needs first and who are not willing to work hard to make love work. Upon entering this class I realized that a community is not an automatic thing. It does not just appear out of thin air. A group must work together to build bonds between each other. The community in which we are trying to build upon is compiled of many different types of people varying in age, race, sex, class, career, etc. It is going to take some time to build the trust, communication, freedom, and love that we need to form a community.…

Do you think there can be too much participation in the community? Well according to some there isn’t enough participation going on in our communities at all. Citizen participation may be a process in which people take part voluntary or legally forced to do either alone or in a group. According to our book, communitarian view praises citizen participation not just in the voting but by participating in groups and working with their neighbors to solve the problems of the community. One way to participate is volunteering as civic participation. Civic means working to make a difference in the civic life of the communities through both political and non-political processes. You can volunteer at different places, for instance: children groups, shelters,…

When a Canadian is asked to name their local Member of Parliament, we all can’t help but laugh at the people who literally don’t know anything about our political system. Unfortunately, the ignorance of politics has been divided into many groups of Canadians, which demonstrates why some people are not informed or interested in discussing political matters. Elisabeth Gidengil, writer of Citizens, explicitly repeats in her novel that Age, Material circumstances, education and gender gaps are factors of being politically engaged (Gidengil 173). Without a doubt, not everyone has those same components to become an active citizen and it’s unfortunate that some choose not to get politically involved. Consequently, the absence of political knowledge has a big effect on Canada because with more uninformed citizens, leads to more societal problems. In this paper, I argue the success of Canada’s democracy is heavily dependent on politically engaged citizens and by having more Canadians convey their concerns, the authorities can realize what political issues to extricate. The result of increasing civic engagement is both a sophisticated…

During my time here, I will be taking part in volunteering but not willingly contribute to the university goal to become the most civically engaged. I will not volunteer to make Drexel look better. That is not the purpose of volunteering. Drexel wants the recognizing but I want the difference the work is going to make. Initially, I can reach out to my community through service by getting myself and others involved in volunteering. For example, I could ask for volunteering opportunities around me, and invite my community to help out by posting on a community site, or encouraging my friends and family to invite their friends and family. I could invite people to my house and we could have ice cream before or after volunteering as an incentive. In our community, the volunteer opportunities cover almost every interest and or passion.…

When I think of community, I think of a much larger concept. It becomes a large mess of interests, values, and sub-categories, which make it impossible to digest the large capacity the word community holds. Community is a mess and yet manages to maintain its wholeness and withhold larger amounts of diversity. Individuals in a community can be different ages, ethnicities, or come from different backgrounds, and incomes. The concept of being apart of a community goes beyond thinking and acting, as individuals bond over common beliefs about shared interests and life. I also see the importance of individual rights in the sense that we do have a duty towards change and individuality by making sure our society or government does not suppress it, and that is the beauty in the face of America. On the contrary, I see that face has become dull and I see community as lost because people have began to put up more walls. It becomes a hard thing to identify because it doesn’t seem existent. Pondering the titles of these communities becomes even more bizarre because I don’t feel as though I identify myself a “member” of these communities, but perhaps as a small and average piece of these large concepts. Although there is this lack of presence, I do feel there are responsibilities I fulfill towards these communities and I recognize the role it plays in my individuality.…

Yet, the various organizations at Austin College sparked my interest, and slowly but surely I began to get involved. Although I have been overwhelmed at times, I quickly learned that being involved in the Sherman community and Austin College’s organizations have become a vital part of my college experience. My experience in these short 7 months have taught me the value of service and being involved. When I performed service events in the past, it was to gain service hours and build up a résumé. Now I serve because helping others give me a genuinely great feeling. My involvement in organizations has helped me to develop character traits such as, integrity, leadership, and service, and other traits that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. I know that these everlasting seeds of integrity, service, and leadership will continue to flourish well beyond college.…

As a particularly curious and proactive member of society, I consider myself to be civically engaged; although the degree of engagement can be argued. Personally, I believe that small things make up the larger picture, so my engagement is mostly interpersonal, as small interactions can set of chain reactions. Speaking out on issues with (or to) friends, politely engaging strangers in conversations and presenting different points of view, and constantly seeking to better myself is how I remain aware and knowledgeable on current issues, and also how I continue to learn new things and refine my thoughts. Not everyone is born to take center stage, and so we must all strive to do what we can, even if it’s simply a few words of encouragement or a…
