In the speech delivered at the Harvard Book Store Nicholas Carr, an American writer interested mainly in technology and business, presented his new book “The Shallows. What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains”. The writer explained also the main thesis of his work, which seems to be the following: Using the Internet has an impact on our brain and the way it is functioning. Ethos is appealed to not only in the narrator’s self-consciousness, but the comparison in condition he has to related bloggers and personal scholastic contacts. A simple yes to the article title, finishes with a call for a more absolute picture of how the Internet use affects thought. For this, Carr relies on the logos of scientific research.…

“is a great chance to understand a distinctive opinion about the Internet world. I agree with Carr’s view points after I finish my reading. His point “People who read text studded with links, the studies show, comprehend less than those who read traditional linear text.”(Nicholas Carr, June 5 2010, Wall Street Journal) showed stringency after Carr gave some support, and I am agree him. For instance, when people are reading online, they can’t always help check and play in their Facebook. In addition, Carr also gave few of experiment to proof his view point, and I think those experiment let me to conviction. Furthermore, the other point that I agree with Carr, is “The Web never encourages us to slow down. It keeps us in a state of perpetual mental locomotion.” (Nicholas Carr, June 5 2010, Wall Street Journal)The Internet just keep distracting us, if we can turn off our computer, we can do anything in attention. For example , once when I turned off my computer, I couldn’t believe I couldn’t finish my homework in 3 hour, and it gave me just 2 hours to finish my math…

The Internet is playing a very important role in the evolution of digital technology, but although it has seen remarkable growth over the last few years, its dispersion remains highly asymmetric. It is widely believed that the so called information age will bring radical change and improvement, and countries all over the world are busy with constructing the necessary infrastructure, the "information superhighways," in order to meet the challenges of the information society of the twenty-first century. Kwame Anthony Appiah’s essay “Making Conversation” tell us about human’s conversation is better expressing themselves in person. In the essay “The Net Is a Waste of Time” by William Gibson, he talks about how he is an “avid browser of the World Wide Web.” While people find this to be odd and his wife finds it positively perverse, Gibson thinks differently saying “I, however, scent big changes afoot, possibilities that were never quite as manifest in earlier incarnations of the Net” (Gibson 691). While some people think he is wasting his time with the web, he believes it will be the tool of the future. Even though the internet has greatly changed since Gibson wrote this essay, I believe that the internet will continue to grow, and will become a bigger part of our everyday lives.…

    Isolated by the Internet

“Isolated by the Internet” an essay written by Clifford Stoll pinpoints exactly what researchers believe the internet is doing too much of today’s society. Stoll explains in detail that Internet is breaking apart family values, slowing personal interaction, distancing reality, and robbing personal time. Clifford Stoll has provided evidence that the internet is breaking apart many families and distancing them from one another. For example, Stoll expresses that many parents bring their work home, and spend only six to eight minutes a day talking with their children (106). Furthermore, Stoll states that productivity in the home takes away from playtime that even in our alone time work seeps into even the most intimate of moments (107,108). Although internet is a fast, aid in society it can also slow basic personal interaction “These electronic intermediaries dull our abilities to read each other’s gestures ad facial expressions, to express our feelings, to strike up conversations with strangers, to craft stories, to tell jokes” (106). Clifford Stoll states that it causes a person not to learn basic skills such as how to interrupt, how to speak in front of a large audience, or worst when to talk or be silent. (107) He brings in psychologists and scientist points of view that contradict significantly with those of major computing companies. For example Stoll references to psychology professor Philip Zimbardo who states that technological advances cause shyness which is a basic lack of communication skill, where as Intel stated “This is not about the Technology, per se; it’s about how it is used (105,106). Stoll uses Zimbardo’s personal account to explain computer isolation, Zimbardo will occasionally walk down the hallway and say hello and to some this is shocking and feels it is invading their space (110). The inability to communicate is in part due to the isolation of internet. Clifford Stoll insinuates that…

"Internet addiction disorder [IAD] refers to the problematic use of the Internet, including the various aspects of its technology, such as electronic mail (email) and the World Wide Web ("Internet Addiction Disorder", 1). There are various symptoms that can lead to IAD which include: failed attempts to control Internet usage; neglecting sleep and family/friends; withdrawal from other activities; use the Internet to “get away” from everyday life or situations, etc (Netaddiction.com, 2). Not only are there many signs of IAD, but also different types. Pornography addiction is one of the leading internet addictions, with 12% of the total number of websites are pornography sites. Video game addiction is also a large factor in internet addiction because of the large amount of MMORPG’s (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). The average MMORPG gamer will spend 20-25 hours per week on a game. Internet social interaction addiction is the most problematic of the three addictions because of the reliance of new social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instant Messaging (“Internet Addiction Disorder” 2). Though each addiction has different orientations, they all can lead to the same risks if exaggerated.…
