Mixing two independent technologies:
Integration of ERP Systems with RFID for Indian Manufacturers -Rishabh Mulani

1. Abstract
The dynamic and competitive business environment today has put an increasing pressure on companies to re-engineer, redesign their business processes, and grasp the potential of partnerships & collaborations along the supply chain. One such technology catering to this need is Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). RFID can be, & is being used to systematize, thereby automating and streamlining the identification processes on the shop floors & warehouses.

Another technology which has sprung up in recent years is Enterprise Resource Planning. ERP & its accompanying applications have become widespread, especially among the world’s largest organizations. Broadly defined, ERP systems are multi-module applications that support many different functions within an organization across a single platform. Integration of such systems with RFID will indeed provide us with accurate, reliable & timely information about physical objects. The business functions covered in ERP implementations often include finance, human resources, marketing & sales. An extended version of the same ERP improvises on collaboration across the supply chain, & includes new modules such as Supply Chain Management (SCM) & Customer Relationship Management (CRM). On proper implementation, ERP systems can create operational efficiencies, unify processes, and drive value within organizations.

As ERP technologies evolve by the year, additional capabilities and functionalities are being supplemented into the systems to make them even more agile & robust. For ERP Systems, one promising area of future innovation involves the integration with RFID technology. This integration can & will bring supply chain management, inventory management & many operational activities to a level of gaining efficiencies that has not been possible till now. This research will identify & analyze RFID technology and explore the possibilities it can offer when integrated with ERP applications. Novel methods to utilize RFID technology in new and existing businesses are being discovered every day. As the costs to produce and manufacture the hardware decrease, RFID’s potential for widespread utilization increases. 2. Introduction

There is no doubt about the fact that the future of Radio Wave technology is RFID, and integration of RFID with the existing ERP infrastructure of an organization.
