Imperialism has caused many different outcomes in the world; some of which were positive, and some were negative. In this particular source, Ludwig von Mises is stating that imperialism has caused a trail of damaging events, and that these events have been so harmful that they must never be forgotten nor justified. As a result of this, the question being raised is whether the acts that came from imperialism were beneficial and important to society or not. Imperialism to Mises was a negative form of globalization. He is explaining the detrimental effects on groups, all the prosperous land that went to waste, and senseless fighting that occurred between groups. Based on this, Ludwig's perspective on imperialism is that it caused many futile circumstances,…
According to the Dictionary Imperialism means “the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies.” To me Imperialism means the gaining of power by a government or ruler of a colony or country. The goal of an Imperialist or Imperialist nation is to gain power over other nations or colonies. They gain this power through “infiltration and annexation, political pressure, war and military conquest” (Alphahistory). When the land being taken is won the imperialist nation becomes the “Mother Country” and now owns another colony or country. Imperialism was actually weird thing for the U.S to engage in because at first the country was set on not getting into…

The long history of the United States is one of continual expansion as shows in the late nineteenth and twentieth-century. Certain factors can be found that are responsible for early American expansion and late nineteenth century imperialism. The motives for expansionism both in America and out were relatively the same. Religious reasons such as in early expansion was spreading Christianity and in late imperialism spreading Christianity to our little brown brothers in the Philippines. Economic factors were contributed by building railroads in expansion and using the sugar and cheap labor in Cuba during imperialism years. Social motives like those in the early years were that of railroads across the plains and keeping up with the European powers in the imperialistic years. Humanitarian, we thought, reasons in the early expansion years was assimilating the Indians and then years later, assimilating the Filipinos. Finally, geographic motives such as the Louisiana Purchase to double the size of America and annexing Hawaii and imperializing Cuba and the Philippines in the later years. The only major difference between these times was the expansion beyond America’s borders.…
The late nineteenth century was known as the age of the “New Imperialism.” Robert Marks describes imperialism as a time “where European countries and the United States competed to grab large parts of the world to create, or add to, their colonial empires.” This in most eyes, does not seem like the correct way to raise a society, but major nations who had power led others to believe in the justification of imperialism through theories, writings, and images.…

Throughout the history of the world, imperialism has played a major role. Imperialism is one country’s complete domination of the political, economic, and social life of another country. Imperialism has many positive and negative effects. The Age of Imperialism is considered 1800 - 1914. During this time Europe became a major world leader. European countries set up colonies all over Africa, Latin America, and Asia, and encouraged their citizens to populate them. European imperialism boosted Europe’s economy, and made them a world power. Imperialization had an entirely different effect on Africa, Latin America, and Asia. People of these countries were mistreated, they lost their culture, land, and self respect. The negative effects of European imperialism outweigh the positive.…
Imperialism means to have an unequal human and territorial relationship, usually in the form of an empire, based on ideas of superiority and practices of dominance, and involving the extension of authority and control of one state or people over another. While the concept of imperialism did accomplish many things it still had its down falls. One thing the concept of imperialism accomplished was the building of The Panama Canal. This was a good thing because it provided a shortcut between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans which was good for exchanging goods. This was a bad thing because America still went and built The Panama Canal even though the Spanish did want them to. At the turn of the 19th century imperialism was not a proper and legitimate policy for the United States because it was politically, military and socially problematic.…

Political and economic factors were primarily responsible for bringing about western imperialism in Africa and Asia. While social factors were important, money and power were primarily at the root. The Berlin Conference was a meeting of major European powers with the express purpose of divvying up the African continent so that they, the Europeans, could make a major profit and gain new territories. This then opened new markets for trade for European manufacturers, who were already experiencing the problem of making more than Europeans could consume; new markets were needed. The addition of territory provided not only those new markets but raw materials for which to fuel growth in those new markets. It was a heavy mix of politics and economics that drove Imperial growth.…
After the UN hearing on British reparations for their acts of imperialism and colonialism in China the council has decided on having Great Britain give a public apology for their actions and millions of pounds to support environmental restoration. This seems like a small price to pay for the acts by the British who took over China in order in profit for themselves. But this can be justified better when taking into consideration how China is currently more productive than Britain, and is growing at an exponential rate, the addiction to opium has been greatly curbed and in many ways China is out-developing the original industrial nation. This does explain why the council chose to issue an apology rather than give unnecessary financial payments.…
Social Darwinism or Imperialism is proven through empires building up in Africa. Through this time period, 1800-1914, nations from Europe take over the continent of Africa. It all started at the Berlin Conference, when European leaders met up to divide Africa up to each nation. British thought they were doing the Africans a favor, but in reality the Africans never wanted them there. The British just came in and said they had control over the land and not them. This led to the African Nationalism. The legendary leader, Shaka Zulu decided to broaden their land throughout southern Africa. The Zulu tribe soon came into conflict with the British, but since the British had more advance technology and vast resources they were able to defeat the Zulu tribe. The British also didn’t have any regard towards the tribal boundaries. Africans suffered from tribalism. Tribalism is feelings of loyalty to individual tribes, and the cause of much war and strife in modern Africa. The effect of tribalism was that it would often lead to civil wars and power struggles within national governments. This is one way it justifies that Social Darwinism or Imperialism remains.…
