Immigration Therapy Case Study
I had the pleasure of interviewing an attorney who has been practicing for two years. I wanted to interview an attorney who is a recent graduate to determine how she approached the sensitive topic of legal ethics. The attorney practices in the areas of Family Law, Criminal Defense, and Immigration.

Q1. From your perspective what is the hardest part of your job in fulfilling the ethical duties?
A1. As an immigration attorney, I mostly focus on asylum cases. With the recent refugees entering the United States, many are seeking legal advice on obtaining asylum. Asylum is very specific and has certain criteria’s that a client has to meet in order to qualify. I find myself in situations in which the client will tell me their story during a consultation

Some main goals that I will focus on with Ms. Francois are working on her anxiety, keeping her job, and investigating her current status on her public assistance benefits. I will be reassuring Ms. Francois about her right to shelter and that I will be here to guide her along the way. I would need to research more information about the “lawsuit” against the U.S. government that the advocacy group is insisting about. Unfortunately, when Ms. Francois asks me to give her case record to them as a part of a class action suit, I will need to refuse. Some legal assistance from a lawyer will need to take place in order to provide the best care and protection for my client. Regarding her current job, I will explore what may be some areas that can be risker her to leave her jobs. Perhaps we can find a specific job that will reduce her stress and still meet the requirements of the PWRORA. I am also wondering who my client’s support systems are. Does she have someone to talk to and be there for her? And if not, perhaps a support group can benefit Ms. Francois.…

On January 19, 2000 Lazaro Gonzalez, plaintiff filed this lawsuit, alleging that the INS lacked the authority to reject the asylum applications and was required by federal statutes and regulations to accept and adjudicate those applications. Defendants urge this Court to dismiss the action or, alternatively, to grant summary judgment. Defendants attack the Complaint on various grounds, each of which is addressed below. Having carefully studied this matter, and mindful of the limits on this Court's authority, the Court concludes that Defendants' Motion To Dismiss or Alternative Motion for Summary Judgment must be granted.…

    An Ethical Interview

My subject for the ethics interview was Angela Williams. I have known Angela throughout my life as a member of my family. She is six years older than I and is experienced in the corporate world which makes her an ideal subject for this interview. Angela graduated from Catholic University in 2005 and has held three separate jobs since then. Other than a Catholic college, she has attended Catholic school throughout her life including a small, all-girls 7-12 high school. Her most recent employment is at a non-profit organization of Massachusetts but her prior employments involved an advertising firm and an insurance agency. All three of these jobs involve marketing/sales which in many cases involve making a product/service attractive to a customer. Angela has shown dedication and devotion to all of her career paths, and from an outside point of view I am able to say that she acts as an ethical professional. Her employment at not only corporations but also non-profits has increased her experience and has given her a better perspective of how people act in each job environment.…

Language barrier, one would think, is the hardest thing for an immigrant to adopt in order to become a member of one’s new life. Correct usage of grammar and slang, and the ability to use it as your own, without first translating it in your head. So one goes to school, and learns the words, and how to form sentences so as to be able to communicate and not feel like a complete outsider. Yet you still don’t feel as though you fit in. In the following couple of paragraphs I’d like to discuss the most obvious to me differences in cultural norms between Ukraine and U.S., that, I as an immigrant observed.…
