I am Keith Marquez, I am a ninth grade student attending Windsor High School in California. I am writing to you as I have an issue with your policies on immigration. My mother had to immigrate to the United States from Mexico. I know first hand how it is like to be born to immigrants and she is anything but a criminal. I believe the immigration laws you plan to put in place should be less harsh and only convicted criminals should be deported. No one should be forced to leave the country if they are contributing to the society by working. No one in Mexico wants to come to the United States, they are forced to by terrible living conditions and a strive to have a better life for their family.     We are receiving way too many illegal immigrants who come to the country and stay without any visas or citizenship papers. Illegal immigration is a huge problem because these people cost the government over 113 billion dollars a year (Trump 287). This is way too expensive and we need to find ways to bring this number down. In one of his campaign speeches, our republican candidate, Donald Trump, talks about this issue and gives alternative options on different ways to fix it. He proposes, “On day one, we will begin working on as impenetrable physical wall on the southern border.” and he adds, “Mexico will pay for the wall.” (Trump 287-288). This is a very idealistic approach to the illegal immigrant problem, however it will not solve many problems at all. Not all illegal immigrants are from Mexico. An immigration article by the New York Times titled, “Here’s the Reality About Illegal Immigrants in the United States” states that about half of the 11 million illegal immigrants are from Mexico, however the other half are from countries such as, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and China (Yee, Davis, and Patel).
