Migrants Arriving in the "Land of Promise," 1901

Immigrants journeying to America by boat take in fresh air above deck. The vast majority of immigrants had to travel in the steerage class—dark, cramped below-deck quarters. The shipping companies that sold passengers steerage listed them as cargo on ship manifests. Many steerage passengers tried to escape the stifling conditions below deck by staying above deck

Complainant reasserts her allegations. Complainant acknowledges that Martinez did not actually say a racial slur; however Complainant states that Martinez’s behavior (shaking his finger and interrupting her) are kinds of behaviors that people use against African-American to discredit and to belittle them. Complainant cites that Martinez’s behavior are “racial microaggressions” which are brief and everyday slights, insults, indignities and denigrating messages sent to people of color.…

During the late 19th century and early 20th century, immigration to the United States was wrought with challenges. The newly arriving aliens were met with racist native-borns who feared that they would threaten their way of life. This tension between these new groups facilitated the U.S. government’s anti-immigration laws, which also caused political outbursts from those who supported immigrants.…

The Border Security, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013, lays the framework for Congress to address many immigration issues that have been locked in gridlock for years in Washington. The proposed bill was crafted to address four major immigration issues. The 844 page long act would tighten border controls, allow more levels of workers to legally immigrate, require employers to verify that workers have legal status, and create an opportunity for those who are in the United States illegally to gain citizenship through a detailed legal process.…

Immigration is the act of people entering into a new country to settle permanently. People immigrated to the United States starting in the 1820’s primarily, and still do to this very day! During the 1820’s until the late 1870’s, mainly only immigrants from the Northern and Western Europe came to the U.S, and these immigrants were called “Old Immigrants.” During the 1880’s and until the 1920’s is when the “New Immigrants” arrived to America from Southern and Eastern Europe. They all arrived using steam ships, which would advance during the years to shorten the traveling time to get to America. Also, there would be many challenges, as well as opportunities, along…

In addition to being cheaper, it also requires less investment in human capital to hire an immigrant worker. The United States has plenty of educated citizens who are willing to work in the technology fields. However, these Americans require training. Employers see it as more expensive and inconvenient to have to train Americans. “The H-1B program ‘has become a major means of circumventing the costs of paying skilled American workers or the costs of training them,’” (Nguyen). Therefore, when given the option, employers while go for the more economical approach and hire foreign workers.…

When typing this discussion board post, I made very similar points in my view on what our county should do about the population of undocumented immigrants. While my moral side says that these are people who come to our country for a better life which is the very basis of our countries founding should be given a chance to become a citizen. While the legal side of me shouts that these people are breaking our laws and that we cannot reward a behavior like that or it will create a precedent which could come back to haunt us. In the end like you said, there is no easy way to answer this question, the only thing I could be sure about is that no matter the decision someone is going to be left furious because of it.…

A large portion of Canada’s population is composed of immigrants. Over the past decades, Canadian’s immigration policy has been comparatively looser among all the Western countries. In the recent years, the federal government has yet tightened the immigration policies. Immigration application has been more difficult of many who are interested in coming into Canada, except for skilled workers. The government has established a point system to calculate and precisely determine the applicant’s qualification. The calculation relies on a list of criteria, considering factors such as age, education level and language proficiency of the applicant. Applicants with higher scores would be eligible for express entry application and their application process…

In conclusion, as a first generation immigrant I could protest that the process of immigration is not easy on any individual. We do not move because we have too, honestly nobody would want to leave the people and things they are familiar with and move to another country. However, we do these things in search of a new life, better education, seeking safety or better jobs. Immigration is never easy on the individual no matter how much time goes by, eventually you learn to cope in order to survive. During the process, many people face mental illness, severe depression, anxiety and stress.…

Farms are hard work. Even if you just have pigs and chickens. We, as in my family, have three pigs, and three chickens. We used to have 5 pigs, but we killed three of them yesterday to eat, and sell some at the market. We also killed a couple chickens. We need the money. We can barely survive with what we got, and that isn’t much. Mostly because we have six people in our family. Plus, my dad doesn’t work much, and my mother and I don’t work at all. And, my older brother works, but he makes the most money. My dad barely works. He is too lazy, and all he does is bring some leftover meat from the chickens and pigs to the market, because he can’t keep a real, good paying job. He is an alcoholic and when he had a job, he would always arrive drunk, so he always got fired. When I say we don’t have much, I mean it. We are luckier than people without anything, but not as lucky as the people who have a big house and all the food they want. We are lucky if we get one meal a day. And for clothing, I only have 2 pairs of pants, and 3 shirts. One pair of shoes, and they are too small and all torn up.…

Thousands of immigrants were forced to leave their countries of origin in the mid-1800s for different reasons: political, war, religious persecution, unemployment, and food shortages. When they learn that in America exists the hope of a new beginning they did not hesitate to take this opportunity. In an unprecedented wave, immigrants left their countries and embarked with a suitcase full of dreams without having the slightest suspicion of the battles that were to bear them because of discrimination. Moreover, the journey to America was very risky in which many of them died during the trip (North Site, 2015).…

I think immigrants play an important role in America. They help build and strengthen America's economy. Immigrants help the economy by creating their own jobs. They work in all types of occupations. They are teachers, scientists, engineers, and construction workers. Every immigrant creates 1.2 local jobs for local workers, raises wages for native workers, and attracts native-born workers from elsewhere in the country. Overall, immigrants improve economy by creating their own business or working in difficult construction places. In addition to improving America’s economy, immigrants make the country more open-minded to new possibilities. America have diverse populations with different beliefs and culture. This means that opinions aren't limited…
