Ilocos tour
It was an unpredictable weather in the summer of 2011, with a mixture of vague feeling of excitement and edginess. I was excited since not only will our relatives and I celebrate our family reunion by having a five-day Luzon trip last April, but also will it be the first time that I would meet my cousins visiting from Florida, Unites States. Edgy, confused, and a bit worried are somewhat my mood due to a simple fact that I have not been practicing my English. Both initially feeling troubled and enthused, these had been unnecessary by the end of the trip since I have pondered many things from that long week of fun and adventure. Our Luzon trip, reuniting the family, therefore, was meaningful not only because it became a very exuberant and a good bonding occasion, but it was also because of the many things I’ve learned from them and from myself.

It was day one, and our first stop was at Clark, Pampanga. We had our breakfast at a five star buffet. While we were getting our food, I’m still pretty anxious towards my cousins even though we have our small talks inside the van as we got there. Not anxious because of my English because I have already gone through the horrors of minimal vocabulary, but due to the fact that I was making an impression to them. But as soon as I got back to our table, when I saw my cousins and my brothers laughing while sharing each of their experiences, all my petty edginess vanished. I realized that I should just be true to myself, like my brothers who only imparted some of their funny childhood experiences with my cousins when I was not born yet. Thus, while enjoying the tasty, voluptuous, and classy foods, I began sharing my “real” self to them. It was uncanny, I think they unquestionably laughed and enjoyed me.

After ten long hours of trip, we stopped by Ilocos Sur. It was evening then and we had dinner in the carinderias of the lively streets of Vigan. While enjoying the blissful lights and elegant historical setting of the place,

We were on our way to Canobie Lake Park. It had been a long two hours, but my dad was playing comedian albums from his phone, so we were preoccupied. “Are we almost there?” my brother asked. “No, were not stop asking.” Little brothers can be so annoying with their questions. We were almost there just five minutes to go. The view was so gorgeous. The lake was glistening from the sun. I had been to focused on the view and before I knew it we were at the…

After Amber’s wedding, Emmett and I decided to take some time off of work and return to Bora Bora. We spent more than a month revisiting all of the tourist destinations we had once visited years prior. I was so surprised to see all of the changes to our favorite spots. It made me think about how much I have changed in all these years. I had been given a wonderful man, three beautiful blessings, and my dream. It felt like everything had been fit into place over all of these…

"Class, this is Alberto and he will be joining our class for this last month of the school year," the teacher yelled as I stood next to her puzzled and embarrassed. For a few hours, I plainly sat in my chair without saying a word, reflecting on my already missed memories of school in Rhode Island, until another student named Luis approached me. Of course, I was expecting him to say something in Spanish, but shockingly he spoke to me in English. Without hesitation, I responded to him and we quickly became close friends.…

Stepping off the plane and arriving to Jamaica was a very big culture shock. I was in awe of the beautiful landscape that covered the island. The food was different and the climate was very hot and sticky. On the third night I threw up because my body was not adjusting to all the changes. Closing my eyes, I wished that I could go home and stay in my bed. I wanted to be in air conditioning and sleep for the rest of the day. But I couldn’t. I needed to get up. I needed to help build the school. So that’s what I did. I got up from sitting next to the toilet, drank some water, had breakfast, and helped my group pour concrete.…

On a December evening cold enough to stimulate a gentle snowfall, I approached an electric blue vehicle residing in my driveway, mentally prepared to depart for Decorah on a school night. Seated in the driver’s seat was my enthusiastic Spanish teacher, beaming wildly as nightfall canvassed the horizon. As I opened the car door, a gust of heat emerged from the vehicle’s interior, luring me inside. Animated chatter spoken immaculate Vietnamese drowned out not only the music droning from the radio, but my Spanish teacher’s benevolent greeting. Nevertheless, I took my seat in the passenger’s seat beside her, and we were subsequently on our way.…
