Two thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of 4th grade will end up in jail or welfare. Over 70 percent of America’s inmates cannot read above 4th grade level. (11 Facts About ...1)The 70 percent of inmates that cannot read is most likely a dropout in school.
53 percent of 4th graders admitted to reading recreationally “almost every day” while only 20 percent of 8th graders could say the same. (2009 study)(11 Facts About …1) America has a lot of famous people with illiteracy problems. They have a accomplished a lot of their goals. People such as Fantasia and Malcolm X are two examples. Before and after Fantasia got famous she was scared d to admit she had literacy. Until one Day her daughter asked her to read a book to her and she would said something like “Later on”. After that day she was like I need to get a tutor so I can know how to read to my daughter. Malcolm X on the other hander was illiterate before he went to jail. In jail, he wrote down the whole dictionary. A 2007 study by the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future found the cost of a teacher leaving runs from $4,000 in rural district to more than $ 17,000 in urban districts. Moreover, student learning and achievement also suffer. Attrition rates are chronically high in at risk schools that typically serve lower-income children. (Education Solutions from….3)
