Ignorance In Fahrenheit 451
“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family.” Fahrenheit 451 is a story that shows the conflict of knowledge and ignorance. Montag is promoting ignorance by burning books, which symbolize knowledge. The ignorance is reflected in society where the government controls the media. The fireman’s duty is to destroy knowledge by burning books and promote ignorance in order to equalize society and promote sameness. Bradbury illustrates that man must maintain knowledge to retain power in order to protect humanity. Beatty compares Montag to a sheep that has strayed, he is essentially saying that Montag is becoming an individual who no longer seems to function under the manner, which his society requires. “Well, after all, this is the age of the disposable tissue. Blow your nose on a person, wad them, flush them away, reach for another, blow, wad, flush. Everyone using everyone else's coattails”(Bradbury 17). This quote means that everyone should have the same rights. He drove forty miles an hour and they jailed him for two days” (Bradbury 9). Clarisse tells Montag about her strange family, the one that actually converses with each other and enjoys nature.
