IELTS writing task 4
Some people think that universities should provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed in the workplace. Others think that the true function of a university should be to give access to knowledge for its own sake, regardless of whether the course is useful to an employer.

What, in your opinion, should be the function of a university?

The true function of universities has been argued over recent years. As a student, who aspires to work in the industry, attending to the college must provide me with sufficient knowledge and skills needed to carry out a specific job competently. On the other hand, there are others who put forward the view that university is a source of knowledge and a way to expand their general understanding of the world.

First of all, those who view college as a training ground for future employees, only focus in being productive. Since, there is no doubt that present employers regard qualifications highly. For example, they want recent graduates to have knowledge in how to solve business or industry problems efficiently.

On the other hand, universities can broaden our horizons and make us more open-minded. It is a fact that knowledge is indeed a powerful tool. For instance, teaching a student a variety of methods to attack a problem, gives him tools to approach any situation successfully and to have a different points of view about a specific subject.

In my opinion, although many people see the university as a source and creator of knowledge and they see it as an opportunity to expand their horizons, in my opinion, nowadays we live in a competitive world. In which industries and other business enterprises require you to have a degree, since for them this is a probe that you are prepared to be efficient and solve a variety of problems and issues for them.

Acquiring academic degree is one of the effective keys that helps people to survive and be successful in the labor market. Yesterday, I glanced at the newspapers and stopped at the small article that is for the recruiters, and I figured out that most employers require their staffs to possess at least the College degree. I realized the fact that we are living in the society in which the degree is getting more valuable than the working skills or experiences. We cannot deny the fact that people who graduated from the famous Universities or received the honor diploma tend to come up with the outstanding productivity. Therefore, it is not surprising that most well-known companies are more likely to hire the outstanding students from the famous Universities because they think those students have ability to develop their business. In addition, college education also improves the skills of those individuals already in the work force by broadening their theoretical knowledge – which can be exploited to generate new ideas. In this case, I am no exception. I joined college to obtain a degree certificate. By obtaining this degree certificate, I am confident that my chances to land the job or profession I desire are high than if I do not have it. The high chances are because the degree certificate ascertains that I met all the requirements and threshold needed to qualify one for a particular field or profession. Therefore, the knowledge of how best I learn is invaluable in the pursuit of my career. This is because the knowledge reveals my strengths and weaknesses in matters that concern learning. Therefore, I am able to know where I need to adjust, increase efforts, or less concentrate on while…

Wendy Brown in the sixth chapter of Undoing the Demos talks about the misuse of higher education in todays society. She makes the point that we humans no longer seek higher learning for its traditional values. Instead we obsess over what the knowledge we obtain can do to further increase our "value". Brown states that, "It is not sought for developing the capacities of citizens, sustaining culture, knowing the world, or envisioning and crafting different ways of life in common. Rather, it is sought for positive return on investment." (Brown 177) This underlying truth has become an epidemic in todays education system.…

There are several reasons why people choose to attend college. One of them is the opportunity given with a college education. By acquiring a college degree of some sort, people open many new doors of opportunities than those without a college education. College graduates will acquire higher-level positions. A college degree is also required to advance or to move up. I recently met a friend that works as a machinist at a shop. He’s thirty-two years old and is going back to college so he can get a degree and move to a management position. Like my friend, many people are going back to college so they can get a degree to move up or to get another career.
