In the Song of Solomon, Toni Morrison creates a story where all the characters are black and where she reveals the true life for blacks after the Civil rights movement. The story revolves around Milkman a black male that is born in the Dead family he knows little about, and his main purpose in life is to find his identity by learning his family tree and background. Toni Morrison reveals when people are introduced to new environments people find the important things in life and realize what they care about the most. Milkman is influenced to be in new environments because his close friend Guitar. Milkman does not know his identity because of his environment of his family, wealth and name. It is important to know that Guitar is now trying to kill Milkman because Guitar believes that Milkman as the gold they stole from Pilate, a women part of Milkman's family. Guitar tries to kill Milkman when he is hunting but Milkman shoots a gun and scares Guitar away, Milkman is gaining courage. When Milkman is done with the hunt days later he hears Children singing “solomon don’t leave me here” and it reminds him of Pilate that is “hundreds miles away”, also helps him realize how “silly” it is for hating his parents and sisters, and then feels “Shame” when he stole from Pilate (300). Milkman is learning who he is as a person, a more congenial and forgiving one. Milkman finds out that his family name is very important to him and the people in his family. Milkman gains this knowledge of his identity because he is far away from his family, were kids are singing, and were he needs to make a own decisions and reflect on it. Milkman feels guilty for stealing from Pilate; stealing is a new environments for Milkman because Milkman is wealthy, he does not need to steal.
