Identifying Energy Saving Opportunity in Building and Role of Social Awareness in Reducing Energy Demand
Identifying Energy Saving opportunity in Building and Role of Social Awareness in Reducing Energy Demand
It is sometimes difficult for us to appreciate the importance of energy conservation. With this project entitled “Identifying energy saving opportunity in building and role of social awareness in reducing energy demand” we realize that simply by being more diligent in our use of energy in homes and offices, would have a significant impact on national energy requirements.

A penny saved is a penny earned. Reckless and unrestrained urbanization, with its haphazard buildings, has bulldozed over the valuable natural resources of energy, water, and ground cover, thereby greatly hampering the critical process of eco-friendly habitat development. However, it is not too late to retrace the steps. Rapidly increasing energy prices, concerns about resource depletion and climate change, have concentrated people’s minds on the role energy plays in our lives. Much of the effort is focused on securing sufficient supplies of electricity, oil, gas, etc, at affordable prices, but reducing energy demand at source can be better alternative.

India has limited energy reserves and therefore it will need to increase its energy efficiency, in addition to re-evaluating its existing building stock. Existing buildings offer one of the greatest potentials in contributing to energy conservation. Even a 10 percent reduction in energy use in home would have a significant impact on national energy requirements, and this could be achieved with little or no investment, simply by being more diligent in our use of energy in homes and offices.

The first step in an energy efficiency approach is to locate the place in the building where maximum energy is used. An energy audit will pinpoint those areas and identify the most effective measures for cutting the energy costs. It is estimated that buildings could save 10-15 percent on their energy bills by implementing energy efficient

There are many ways to conserve natural resources, all we need to do is look around and find a way to minimize the usage of natural resource that we using everyday. For example, turn off the lights when we leave the house; minimize the waste produced by buying less packaged goods and reusable products, and recycling. These are little things we can do to help, and these does not take much effort to do; however, if everybody does the same, we can still make that difference. In the big picture, we can consider using more renewable natural resources such as hydro-power and solar-power. These energy resources are the best ways to conserve natural resource such as fossil fuel. Fortunately, many energy conservative products have been invented: hybrid or electric cars and energy-efficient home appliances. These are the reflections of people’s concern towards the natural resources depletion. On the whole, we need to start do our share to conserve the energy and resource as part of our responsibility to the natural…

Environmental psychology research has been incorporated into architecture such as homes with material on the roof to generate solar power energy instead of employing local company power and energy that could create an expensive monthly bill. People who continually drive to work instead of use public transportation or people who consume unnecessary energy at home or at the workplace are have an effect on the environment such as causing depletion of the ozone layer, pollution, and sporadic climate change. People who develop healthy lifestyles including eating healthy, exercising, and learning about environmental sustainability would contribute more to decreasing pollution, climate change, and depletion of the ozone layer. “Essential items on both the research and policy agendas concerning sustainability are the resource intensity of human production…

We as humans can do our part personally to contribute in energy conservation and helping to sustain the environment through using more energy efficient appliances which can be a bit costly at first but will save energy, the environment, and ourselves money in the long run. We as consumers can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs. And the next time you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle that is fuel efficient like a hybrid car which combines gasoline engines and electric motors. I think knowledge is power when it comes to each person doing their part so feel free to engage in more research on…

The energy that humankind is using at home pollutes the environment and reduces the availability of energy in the future. (GovHK 2010) Lighting and air conditioning are the major forms of energy consumption at home. (GovHK 2010) Both governments are therefore working to help all homes use less energy and save money from energy bills by proposed regulations and financial support. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) The Energy Efficiency Labelling Scheme is being promoted in Hong Kong and the Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) programs are also being promoted in Australia. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) These two programs have similar functions and policies. They are set out in the relevant appliance standards. (Australian Government 2009) and (GovHK2010) “For lighting, compact fluorescent bulbs are highly cost-effective replacements for incandescent, and the prices of new technologies, such as LED, are declining.” (Diesendorf 2007) In brief, the Australian and Hong Kong Governments have similar policies to save energy in homes by reducing light energy and setting appliance…

After having worked in the oil industry for five years and seeing first hand the impact oil production may have on our planet the experience caused me to ask myself, “Is there a better way?” This and many other questions sparked curiosity to the effects our current methods have on our people and the way we live and work. On a global scale renewable energy supplies a significant benefit to our planet such as, lowering energy costs, job creation, and preserving the environment. With energy costs continuously on the rise and more frequent disasters affecting us as a whole, the fact remains that moving toward renewable energy forms most certainly makes these problems vanish. Though not an easy task it is safe to say that the world is headed in a green direction.…

Before completing this reflexive diary I would have considered myself fairly energy conscious. I would have still said I’m wasteful but I thought I was more aware than others. I thought I knew more about the environmental consequences of wasting energy than I did. Completing this diary really opened my eyes to the amount we all waste energy unnecessarily. Almost all of us don’t have a clue how much energy we consume. I had never thought about it as anything more than the lights and the heating at home and I’m sure many others are the same. As the week went on I started to realise more and more how much energy I alone was using in a day, then I began to notice how much my friends, family etc. consume and how much could be saved so easily. When thinking about the project I noticed how much the college could reduce its energy consumption simply by making the students and staff more aware and encouraging them to change. However, I also know that even though something like turning off a light when you leave the room is an easy task, it’s very hard to get people to even remember to always try to conserve energy. Convenience is also a big factor. Since finishing the diary I have been thinking that a plan could be made to educate the students and staff of the college on the reasons for energy conservation and showing them how much can be saved from doing so little.…

There are many different energy resources, and all have different advantage and disadvantages that add or subtract to its overall effectiveness; factors such as its reliability, its supply, or how much pollution it emits. Some energy resources are not extracted from the earth, but from nature’s elements or recycled materials. These energy resources are called “renewable” energy resources; renewable energy resources consist of wind, hydrokinetics, biomass, hydroelectricity, geothermal, and solar energy. On the other hand, some energy is extracted from the Earth and the supply will run out one day. This is called “non-renewable” energy resources. Non-renewable energy resources consist of fossil fuels (petroleum, coal, natural gas) and uranium (nuclear energy). The amount of pollution released from producing energy is a big concern, but not all of the energy resources emit the same amount of pollution. The alarming fact is, recently, many of the energy resources that emit large amount of pollution are being overused. The depletion of natural resources, in addition to the rapid increase in consumption of these resources, has encouraged many nations to conserve energy. Energy is mankind’s future and together human can protect it by sustaining and improving the Earth’s energy resources.…
