What is hardware?- components such as keyboards, monitors, a mouse the system unit, and external devices, such as a printer
An input device is used for putting information into the computer, i.e. a keyboard, for imputing words and data.
An output device would be a device, like a monitor, a monitor will display things to you.
The types of computer- a microcomputer (PC) – a mainframe computer can be used by many people at a time, and is able to carry out intensive tasks. A minicomputer is a smaller version of a mainframe computer. A super computer is a very large mainframe.
Different types of PC – a laptop, a tablet, a notebook, a hand held computer, a PDA a palmtop
OMR advantages- faster and less expensive
OMR disadvantages- must be printed very accurately. Mistakes are very unlikely to be recognised.
MICR- identifies printed data using a special ink
MSCR- a magnetic stripe card reader reads only information from a magnetic stripe on the surface of a plastic card when it is striped through the reader.
Smart card- chip and pin system, used to withdraw money from a bank usually.
Advantages of smart cards- often used as ID, that is small and light and can be carried at all times. The data on the chip can be imported into a computer and can be imputed into a computer. It is more secure than what is put on a magnetic stripe. The data can be updated during transactions.
Disadvantages of smart cards- the data on the chip can be affected by electromagnetic radiation. a recorded on the chip can be copied by criminals and used for fraud.
Digital cameras store pictures on a memory card in a format suitable for viewing and saving on a computer. They can also be edited with suitable editing software. The memory cards in the camera can also be inserted into a TV and can be viewed by a large amount of people.
A webcam is a type of digital video camera where the image is captured and viewed by a computer. This can have a variety of uses: to see how the
