Iago In Othello's Jealousy
Iago is a cruel and evil man who uses ways to ruin Othello and Desdemona’s relationship. Othello appointed Cassio, to be his lieutenant. Iago was mad when he heard about it, he believes that he should be the one for the position since he knows more. This started off with his jealousy of Cassio. When Othello and Desdemona got married without letting anyone knowing, Iago begins to plot his plan. He used Roderigo to help him throughout the process of his plan to bring down Cassio. He then told Othello lies to ruin his own relationship. He also use Bianca as his part of the plan. Iago got people into thinking he was a nice honest guy, but he uses other people's jealousy and gullibleness for his own benefit. Roderigo was a very gullible man and he is jealous for what wasn’t his. He believes whatever Iago told him. Roderigo loves Desdemona so when he heard the news from Iago he was heartbroken. “What a full fortune does the Thick-lips owe If he can carry’t thus” (1.1.68)! Roderigo was jealous of Othello for getting marry to Desdemona. Iago used this time to tell Roderigo that they can break Othello and Desdemona up by calling for her father. “Call up her father. He was a calm person, but when Iago starts telling him that Desdemona is being unfaithful to him and when he starts believing it, he got jealous. Iago did this on purpose to ruin Othello’ relationship. “She did deceive her father, marrying you; And she seemed to shake and fear your looks, she loved them most ” Iago said that Desdemona betray her father and will betray Othello too. At first Othello was having is doubt but then Iago proved to him that it is true but setting Cassio up. He made it seem like Cassio and Desdemona had an affair, putting the handkerchief to Cassio. “That’s a fault. The handkerchief” (3.4.57) Othello tried to confirm it with Desdemona but after witnessing Bianca and Cassio’s conversation he didn’t ask for any further

    The protagonist and tragic hero of this play is Othello, the moor of Venice. From the beginning of the play, Othello's actions or assumed actions have influenced, either directly or indirectly, his fate.
